Speaker Series ~ In Pursuit of the Improbable

Speak Series: In Pursuit of the Improbable with Stephen Powles Join award‑winning wildlife photographer and conservationist Stephen Powles for a lively and insightful journey into the natural world. In this talk, Stephen shares a medley of amusing, surprising and deeply informative wildlife stories, revealing how patience, curiosity and an understanding of animal behaviour helped him capture some of his most challenging photographs and film sequences. Expect encounters with pine martens, a remarkably “smart” mouse, hornets, tawny owls, and other elusive species — each with its own improbable tale. A former vet, Stephen changed career to pursue his lifelong passion for wildlife, photography and conservation. His work has appeared on television, in the national press and has earned major awards. Much of his photography focuses on the fascinating wildlife found in and around his Devon home. A video introduction to this event can be viewed HERE . Film Night - The Choral

1916 As war rages on the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Choral’s ambitious committee, determined to press ahead, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) – driven, uncompromising, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together. Reel Earth - The Engine Inside

Please note a change of venue - this event will now take place at Bovey Paradiso Riding towards a better future - to kick off Bovey's Great Big Green Week and in partnership with CABH and First Draft Books we are delighted to present The Engine Inside as part of our Reel Earth series. For the past century, our society has grappled with the unintended consequences of a car-centric culture. Follow the lives of six individuals from diverse backgrounds who have devoted themselves to a simple, age-old machine - the bicycle. Through their struggles and challenges, witness how bicycles have the potential to transform lives and contribute to a better world. The Engine Inside—a new feature-length documentary from Anthill Films—tells the stories of six everyday people from all over the globe who reveal the unique power of the bicycle to change lives and build a better world. Through their stories, we uncover the overlooked potential of this 200-year-old machine, learning that in the face of our seemingly insurmountable global challenges, hope lies in the simple act of riding our bikes. Shimano, Pon.Bike and PeopleForBikes present an Anthill Films production, narrated by the voice of cycling, Phil Liggett. Featuring Jay Bearhead, Nouran Salah, RRDBlocks, Janice Tower, Megan Hottman and Kwabena Danso, with Danny MacAskill and Robert Gesink. The film will be introduced by Bovey Tracey's own award winning custom bike builder Pi Manson".
