Canadian Family History

Speaker – Janice Strand. Most of use are familiar with tracing ancestors who emigrated to the United States, and Janice has spoken to us before about emigration in general. This evening, Janice will target her talk on her home country, Canada. Often overlooked or little understood, Canada features more than you might have thought in emigration from Britain and Janice will tell the story for us in what should be an interesting evening. Leicester’s Old Town Festival

The Guildhall, Guildhall Lane, Leicester, LE1 5FQ There will be lots of free events across sites in Leicester’s Old Town, including the Cathedral, Cathedral Gardens, and Jubilee Square. Also at the Jewry Wall Museum and the Richard III Visitor Centre (charges apply). We will be based in the Guildhall, Guildhall Lane, with a family/local history exhibition and information, working with Leicester University’s Heritage Hub. Problems for immigrants 1600s to 1700s

Speaker – Nigel Mann. Nigel will be exploring the problems and challenges faced by immigrants in Britain through the 17th and 18th centuries. He will follow a family of refugees from their home in northern France to the Netherlands, then to Yorkshire and finally gaining safety in a religious retreat in Cambridgeshire. The history of the census

Speaker – Simon Pawley. Simon will cover census history from Domesday Book, through subsequent collections of data and on to the Napoleonic wars and the need to establish potential soldier numbers. The familiar census format started in 1841 and he will talk on the evolution of our national census. There will also be advice on how to research and use the census in family history research.
