Through the voices of farmers, historians, conservationists, and local people, the film reveals how centuries of working the land have shaped the hills, fields, and villages we see today. As the seasons turn, it explores the challenges facing rural life — from changing farming practices to environmental pressures — while celebrating those who are working to care for the land and keep its traditions alive. Three Bad Men (1926) With live piano score by Meg Morley

A new series of silent-era classics arrives at The Pound Arts Centre, all accompanied by live piano score performed by BFI Southbank’s resident pianist Meg Morley. Since performing for her first silent film in 2016, Meg has quickly become one of the UK’s pre-eminent silent film accompanists, performing at various international film festivals and playing reguarly at the London Cinema Museum. In the 1870s, gold is discovered in the Dakota Territory, and wanted men Bull Stanley (Tom Santschi) and Mike Costigan (J. Farrell MacDonald) join thousands of other pioneers on a westward journey in search of wealth. Soon, Bull and Mike see a gang of thugs attacking Lee (Olive Borden), a young woman. They rescue her, but her father is killed during the assault, so Mike and Bull become her guardians. Before long, Bull and Mike leave their criminal pasts behind and devote themselves to Lee.

Since performing for her first silent film in 2016, Meg has quickly become one of the UK’s pre-eminent silent film accompanists, performing at various international film festivals and playing reguarly at the London Cinema Museum. A tale of adventure on the high seas. An aristocrat joins a pirate crew in order to avenge the death of his father and, along the way, rescues a princess. This is the first major feature film to be made entirely in Technicolor and contains one of the silent screen’s most spectacular stunts. Starring the legendary Douglas Fairbanks.

A new series of silent-era classics arrives at The Pound Arts Centre, all accompanied by live piano score. Note: Pianist John Sweeney will be standing in for our initially advertised performer Meg Morley. A tale of adventure on the high seas. An aristocrat joins a pirate crew in order to avenge the death of his father and, along the way, rescues a princess. This is the first major feature film to be made entirely in Technicolor and contains one of the silent screen’s most spectacular stunts. Starring the legendary Douglas Fairbanks. John Sweeney John Sweeney has played for silent film since 1990, starting at Riverside Studios in London and subsequently playing at many venues in Britain including the National Film Theatre, the Barbican Cinema, Broadway in Nottingham, the Imperial War Museum, and Watershed in Bristol. He has played for the British Silent Cinema Festival since its inception and has since 2000 been a regular pianist at the Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone, Italy. He is a regular performer at the Slapstick Festival of silent comedy in Bristol, and has also played at other festivals in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia. He has recorded DVDs for the BFI ('Wonderful London', parts of 'Pioneers and Primitives') and also Cineteca di Bologna ('Albert Capellani') and Edition Filmmuseum ('Crazy Cinématographe') as well as recording a soundtrack for Hitchcock's 'Downhill' for broadcast on Sky TV.

Pram

Pram formed in the late 80s with a sound that ranges from exotica, Krautrock and the forgotten film soundtracks. Over the years Pram have expanded their ideas to encompass disorientating shifts in mood, with their new material seeing the band build on their distinctive soundscape with added textures and a raw, powerful live show careering from eerie to bone-shaking Pram are essentially a product of the post-punk late 80s, inspired by the likes of The Raincoats and The Slits and contemporaries of Stereolab and Broadcast. Pram have always sounded like they make up their own rules, including an inventively open approach to rhythm and timing. And their use of theremin and the manipulation of instruments also adds a certain harmonic wooziness. The band still use a bewildering array of instruments and are unrepentantly unfazed by the possibilities of performing on anything and everything that seems appropriate. “It’s not possible to develop a facility on every instrument we want to use” explains founder member and multi-instrumentalist Sam Owen, “so we simply don’t worry about it and look instead for the initial thrill of discovering a new sound”. The addition of mountain dulcimer and trombonist/theremin player Harry Dawes’ sometimes playful, occasionally mournful soprano saxophone are a testament to this continued experimentation in the new set.

The Amazing Bubble Man

Louis Pearl has been thrilling audiences around the world for over 30 years with the art, magic, science and fun of bubbles. He is a favorite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he has enjoyed 14 years of sell-out success. Louis explores the breath-taking dynamics of bubbles, combining comedy and artistry with audience participation and enough spellbinding bubble tricks to keep everyone mesmerized. From square bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, fog-filled bubbles, giant bubbles, bubble volcanoes, tornados and trampolines to people inside bubbles, the Amazing Bubble Man conjures shrieks of laughter and gasps of amazement from all ages. Old Baby Mackerel

Old Baby Mackerel play high-energy, foot-stomping bluegrass featuring some of the UK’s best bluegrass musicians. Be prepared to be transported back in time to the early 20th century and across the Atlantic to North America where songs dramatized the small town fascination with locomotion, religion and the veneration of whisky and boot leg liquor. Gathered around a single condenser microphone in the true bluegrass style, the sounds of banjo, guitar, mandolin and double bass blend lightning-fast rhythm, virtuosic solos and evocative harmonies to get knees bouncing and elbows swinging. Old Baby Mackerel have been featured on three different BBC radio stations including 6 Music with Cerys Matthews, played Glastonbury Festival festival twice (2019 and 2022) and sold out venues across the UK such as Green Note in London, The Acorn in Penzance and Seaford Little Theatre in Sussex. In 2024 they completed a sold out tour of Dorset and have played headline slots at Purbeck (2022) and Priddy (2023) folk festivals, the Northern Irish, Cornish, Welsh, East Anglian and Swiss Bluegrass festivals, at venues and festivals all over the UK and Ireland as well as Belgium, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Portugal and Thailand.
