11 July: David Mitchell

David Mitchell describes his guitar playing as “Folk-Classical fingerstyle”, combining these genres to create a beautiful and unique take on some well known pieces and traditional folk tunes as well as performing his own original compositions. Alongside performing solo, David enjoys collaborations, depping in with other bands and musicians near and far as well as his fiddle and guitar duo ‘Mitchell & Kirby’. For ceilidhs, he leads the ‘Barn Owls Ceilidh Band’ and gigs regularly with the “Monkey See Monkey Do Ceilidh Band”. In addition to being a talented musician, David trained as a luthier at Newark and Sherwood College and uses a Classical Guitar that he crafted himself. He also plays other stringed instruments as well as whistles and recorders. David has enjoyed performing solo guitar at a range of lovely venues including Downend Folk & Roots, Banbury Folk Club, The Amadeus, Wessex Acoustic Folk Club, Fivehead Folk & Acoustic Music Night, VegFest Bristol, Broadstairs Folk Week as well as many other public and private events. David’s debut solo album, Contours, released on the 18th of October 2024 has been described as “tremendous” by Alan Ritson of Fine Folk (LCR FM), “A bit of a cracker!” by Mike Norris of Classic Folk (the EFDSS radio show) and “excellent” by Robert Ford of The Folk & Roots Show (Abbey FM). July 16 - Film - Where Women Rise

Seventeen women. One mountain. No more silence. In the shadow of Africa’s highest peak, a group of extraordinary women embark on a journey that begins long before they reach the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Cloudline: Where Women Rise is a raw, breathtaking documentary following seventeen trekkers as they battle sub-zero temperatures, thinning air, and the physical limits of their own bodies to conquer the “Roof of Africa.” But for this team, the steepest climb has already happened. More than half of the trekkers live with life-altering childbirth injuries or ostomy bags—conditions often shrouded in shame and medical stigma. From survivors of traumatic births to those reclaiming their identity after stoma surgery, these women are hiking to fundraise for a charity dedicated to supporting and empowering other women both in the UK and Kenya to embrace life after stoma surgery or childbirth injury. “We aren’t just climbing for ourselves; we’re climbing for every woman who has been told her body is a source of shame. We are taking that shame to the summit and leaving it there.” The Journey at a Glance: The Mission: Raising vital funds and awareness for childbirth injuries and ostomy support in Kenya. The Team: 17 women united by shared trauma and a refusal to be defined by their physical “limitations.” The Challenge: 19,341 feet of unforgiving terrain where every step is a testament to resilience. Through intimate interviews and grueling high-altitude footage, the film strips away...

23 July Blue - Joni Mitchell Sung by Mae Karthauser

“I was utterly blown away… an absolute emotional rollercoaster..magical” Amy “In all my years I have never cried at a gig. I was crying on the first song” Martin Songwriter Mae Karthauser is lending her voice to a breathtaking new live performance: a heart wrenching tribute to Joni Mitchell’s seminal album Blue. Mae will be performing the entire Blue album, plus nine other Joni favourites from her early songwriting era. Mae, who has performed at Glastonbury Festival, on prime-time BBC1 and on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 6, identified Joni Mitchell as the first and most influential songwriter she discovered as a teenager, and was called to delve into recreating the album as a live performance when approached by friend and guitarist Rowland O’Connor at the end of a gig back in 2025. “Who’s album would you most like to recreate?” he asked. Unprompted, they both came up with the same answer. “Joni Mitchell’s songs feel like dreams, like journeys off somewhere deep and familiar” says Mae. “It’s great to go beyond memorising and really into the magic, the poetry and the stunning emotional landscapes Joni is able to conjure with her songwriting” Breathing new life into the 1971 classic, Mae’s silken and athletic vocals soar nimbly over Joni’s melodies, and paired with her expressive piano playing she brings a raw and living presence to these timeless songs.

10 September- Film Jo in the Water + Q&A with Director Pip Piper and Jo Bateman

Jo in the Water follows a passionate sea swimmer turned reluctant activist, Exmouth-based Jo Bateman, as she takes on one of the UK’s biggest water companies in a David-and-Goliath battle to protect our waters from devastating sewage pollution. In the wake of Channel 4’s recent hard-hitting docu-drama which has left many people both angry and frustrated, Jo in the Water picks up the baton from Dirty Business and seeks out joy and inspiration amongst the many amazing individuals fighting to make a difference. As Jo’s courage helps ignite a growing movement, this film exposes the dire state of our water system and asks: who will stand up for our right to swim in clean natural waters, for the species and communities that rely upon them? Jo in the Water is a feature-length documentary made by award-winning filmmakers with a strong track record of bringing powerful stories to our cinema screens. It is not just about water pollution; it is about connection—to nature, to our own sense of place, and to our responsibility for the world around us. Featuring Jo Bateman, Jeremy Vine, Jim Murray MBE and Chris Packham. “Jo inspires people… they realise that together we have a greater strength. In a shoal like this we become mighty.” Chris Packham, Wildlife TV presenter & conservationist “As someone deeply entrenched in the fight to save our waters from pollution I’m delighted to be part of this important documentary.
