Workshop: Introduction to composition and group music-making with Tom Culling

Local composer and musician Tom Culling returns to Full of Noises to run a series of workshops for neurodivergent and disabled young people aged 11-17. The workshops start on 10 August and will be held over four days spread out over two weeks. These sessions were very popular last year – and places are limited to eight. What is involved? Participants will learn how to write, record and perform a piece of music in a safe and inviting environment with experienced musicians, exploring various accessible, technology-based gateways into music-making. You will explore: Musical experimentation, improvisation, composition, music technology and live-electronics, performance. These sessions are suitable for people with any level of musical experience, including those without any prior experience. There will be two sessions each day, each lasting two hours, with a lunch break and rest time in between at our accessible building in Barrow Park. Commitment of four days Over the course of the summer school, we will record an album as a group. Participants are expected to commit to coming to all sessions as they will be aiming towards an informal group performance on the last day. Carers are welcome to attend, and breakout spaces will be available during each of the sessions. Participants must bring their own lunch and are welcome to bring any instruments from home, however instruments will be provided. The Crocodile of Sadness by John Powell Jones

The Crocodile of Sadness is an imaginative, visually striking performance about grief, care and the pressure of carrying things alone. We are thrilled that John Powell Jones is bringing this to Full of Noises for two FREE matinee performances on 12 and 13 of August at 1.30pm. This is part of Barrowfull’s summer Playcations. Recommended for ages 8+ FREE ENTRY but you need to BOOK HERE. The show blends storytelling, digital projection and unexpected moments of disruption to create an intimate and shifting live experience. Adapted from an original graphic novel by John Powell Jones and presented at Lowry for the first time, the performance moves between folklore, speculative storytelling and performance lecture as the narrative gradually begins to unravel. Set in the fictional world of Durt, the story follows Drock, a crocodile entrusted with carrying the sadness of the Skyn Forest in delicate, egg-like vessels. As the forest’s inhabitants grow increasingly dependent on this system, the emotional cost of placing so much responsibility on a single figure slowly comes into focus. The journey is guided by The Maddock, a ceremonial storyteller, and The Rollop, a scholarly interpreter of myth.

FILM: Hope Strickland: An Unimaginable Leap + retrospective

7:00pm doors, 7:30pm films start Tickets are £3 – or pay what you want – and are available on the link or pay on the night. Full of Noises will show a selection of short films by Hope Pearl Strickland followed by a Q and A with the artist. Hope is a British Jamaican artist-filmmaker from Manchester working across experimental and documentary-based modes. Hope’s work wrestles with the choices undertaken when we visualise racialised violence, attempting to ask how we might live in a world and relate to one another with care whilst amongst and against systems of power and control. A particular focus is given to re-entangling the supposedly disparate landscapes of Jamaica and the North of England, through an attention to labour migration, diasporic longing and resource extraction. Films to be shown: AN UNIMAGINABLE LEAP (2026 forthcoming) 17minutes 40seconds 16mm, archival This is a brand new work by Hope. St, Mary’s Parish, Jamaica, April 1760, in a cave near what is now known as Tacky Falls. Tacky’s Rebellion is unfolding as the most significant revolt of the eighteenth-century Caribbean, three decades before the Haitian Revolution. The aim is to take control of the British island colony and create a Black independent state. An Unimaginable Leap considers the relationship between revolutionary time and cinematic form.
