Clay Workshop and Firing Experience

19th September 2026 This two day workshop offers a unique offering to explore Wolterton Hall's 2026 Arts and Culture Programme through the lens of clay and fire. Together we will spend a morning reflecting on the works of Phyllida Barlow and Daisy Parris in clay, and waste slip made from septarian nodules processed by Clay Research Group during material studies undertaken at Wolterton Hall in 2025. Works made will be bisque fired and brought back for a second session of wood firing, where you will be invited to join a shift in the day of a firing. All works will then be unpacked from the kiln after cooling, cleaned and posted to you as a record of Wolterton's annual programme, material and community: THE MAKING WORKSHOP A chance to explore the Wolterton Hall grounds and Arts and Culture programme, where we will meet and reflect on the show together as a group. Returning to the walled garden to work in clay from inspired objects selected by Ali Hewson and Rachel Kurdynowska. Decorate with a nodule slip that melts to a pooling blue in reduction. The pieces made during this workshop will be dried and bisque fired ready for the following month. THE FIRING During the making part of the workshop, participants will be invited to join the wood firing of works made during the workshop through an allocated 2 hour firing shift. This is an exciting opportunity to participate in the different stages of a wood firing in our walled garden.
