The Loom Shed Weave Study Group 26/27 - Overshot

Mondays 7 – 8pm 7th September 2026, 18th January, 5th April, 5th July 2027 and September 2027 This year, join Louise and Liz for one of their weaving passions — Overshot! Yes, we are teaching this course ourselves! Expert weaver and tutor Louise has been teaching weaving for years, and it was through her guidance that Liz discovered that weaving was missing from her life for too long!. Together, we bring both experience and enthusiasm to every session, sharing the skills and insights that have kept The Loom Shed alive and thriving. We love overshot: perhaps it’s the fair-isle overtones, perhaps the clear pattern — but always with the possibility of pushing the classic structure out of the box. Over five online sessions, we’ll introduce the structure, familiarise you with threading, lifting, and the rules of overshot — and then show you how to bend them. Add more than one colour? Use textured or bobbly yarn? Create your own structure? Absolutely yes, yes and yes! This course is ideal for newer weavers, working from the beginning of the structure on four shafts. But if you have more experience and want a fresh challenge, we welcome you too.

An Introduction to Tablet Weaving with Sue Day

Braid weaving is a fascinating craft – such complex patterns can be made with a seemingly simple, portable loom. But perhaps that’s how our ancestors always wove? Connect with your inner Viking and enjoy this absorbing way of weaving for a day. During this workshop, expert tutor and dyer, Sue Day will show you how to make a braid by turning the tablets in different directions to create the final design. We will learn how to thread the tablets and weave a design with a triangle motif. We’ll explore the effect of colour on the pattern, how the threading affects the final outcome and what the possibilities are of using different shaped cards. Sue will even guide us in the process of designing our own braiding patterns. This workshop will give you a good grounding in the tablet weaving with handouts to refer to in the future. You may find yourself addicted! Sue Day will provide all equipment and materials, so you can just relax and enjoy the weaving. As usual, The Loom Shed will provide you with a nourishing lunch, plenty of tea and coffee with a sweet treat or two!

Learn to Spin with Amanda Hannaford

This is one not to miss! The very experienced spinner and highly skilled tutor and author, Amanda Hannaford is coming to The Loom Shed to teach us how to spin right from the very beginning! Try your hand at carding, using a spindle and a spinning wheel. If you’re completely new to spinning, but always wanted to have a go, this workshop is for you. Amanda will start by introducing you to a large basket of clean wool straight from the sheep’s back, and all the tools you need to turn the wool into useable yarn. We will use specially designed wire brushes to turn the wool in to fluffy rolls and then add twist using a hand spindle to make the loose fibres into yarn. There will be spinning wheels on hand to try, in case you’d like to take your newfound hobby further, and we’ll also experiment with mill-prepared wool in case you don’t know any friendly sheep! The Loom Shed will provide a delicious lunch, plenty of teas and coffee and a sweet treat when needed!

Introduction to Weaving with Louise Cottey

Have you always wanted to try weaving? Or have you tried weaving with a frame or rigid heddle loom, but never tried a four shaft loom? This is the perfect opportunity. Take a morning for yourself and relax with us at The Loom Shed. We will set up the loom for you and give you all the resources and tuition you need to explore the relationship between colour, texture and structure in woven textiles. Learn the tricks of the trade to make a fabric that feels nice and doesn’t pull in at the sides. Do be warned though, this may leave you wanting to weave more – we certain hope so! Full tuition, equipment, and yarn will be provided with plenty of tea, coffee and cake.
