Autumn Edible Hedgerow (Rochdale)

2026 - Sat 29th Aug Autumn is simply our favourite time of year here at Discover the Wild, not only is it the mushroom season but the hedges and woodlands are groaning under the weight of their own fruit. This is the time of year to get to know you Elder from your Rowan, your Sloes from your Damsons and your Raspberries from your Japanese Wineberry! Of course the added benefit of going on a walk for berries in the autumn means you are likely to encounter mushrooms along the way, so not only could you be picking a basket full of ripe juicy berries but you could be lucky enough to find mushrooms like the Chanterelle or even Porcini. The walk is easy going and we will be stopping often to look at the wealth of botanicals on offer at this time of year.

Edible Mushrooms (North Wales)

2026 - Sun 27th Sept, Sat 17th Oct, Weds 28th Oct A walk in the stunning Welsh landscape, this event will get you looking for some of the most wonderful wild edible mushrooms we have in this country, 4 types of Chanterelle, 2 types of Hedgehog, Porcini and many, many more it is one to attend if you have a passion for wild mushrooms. We will also encounter some very poisonous species, making this a great event to learn what not to pick as well as what to pick. The world of mushrooms and fungi can be a daunting one to the novice, filled with many species and look a likes. This one day workshops will help you to identify fungi with more confidence and understand the families of fungi and how to tell them apart from the edible Cep to the deadly Deadly Webcap. The walk will take in a variety of habitats from coniferous and decidous woodlands, to grassland and parkland as well as spending a bit of time walking along a beautiful river. This area of Wales is one of our favourites and we have spent many hours here searching for the amazing fungi it has to offer, there is a great mixture of species and this event will produce lots of edible species, poisonous ones, medicinal ones and just damn right rare ones. In some years bad weather (for fungi at least) can mean we find fewer specimens (though we have always found between 45 and 90 species in this wood) so there will be plenty to find.

The Magic of Mushrooms (North Wales)

2026 - Sat 24th Oct Finding mushrooms in the autumn is one of lifes real pleasures. This is event will introduce you to the world of mushrooms, the different families, species, We will walk through some beautiful woodland and grassland along a river in search of lots of species for us to feast our eyes upon. Although we pick our dates in our advance, they are usually some of the most productives times of year in finding lots of different species, but the weather can make this easier or more difficult in some years. Often we see lots, others less so, especially in hot or dry autumns, but we always find interesting species so no matter the weather you will have a great time immersing yourself in this fascinating world. For Fungi's Sake (Rochdale)

2025 - Sat 15th Nov 10am Join us for a session of discovering the weird and whacky fungi that are still out after the main fungi season has ended. We will be looking for species that rotting wood, but some of which can be medicinal, such as Turkeytail and Birch Polypore and also looking for fungi that can found on logs like the Beech Jellydisc, Hairy Curtain Crust and many more. This event will help you understand how fungi work, why they are important, where to look for them and also discuss any species we come across which are edible, medicinal or poisonous. It is a celebration of fungi, in all there forms, from colourful to drab, big to small and jelly like to wood like, it is an event that will leave you wanting to find more. Places are limited on our events, this allows for a more relaxed atmosphere and allows David to give you a personal tuition and also follows Covid guidelines.
