Residential Writing Course: Memoir/Place (Fiction and Non-fiction)

The stories we tell – be they fiction, journalistic non-fiction, memoir, or a hybrid form – all take place somewhere. A work may not be about a place, but a work is brought to life when the reader has a sense of place. This course will examine how to transform a landscape from something passive we might gaze at to something we have an active conversation with: something that speaks through us as writers, and speaks to our readers. Join acclaimed authors Jade Angeles Fitton and Tom Vowler to learn how they capture the essence of place in their work, and explore the overlooked places within us and without us when it comes to our own writing. How can a place act as a metaphor or personality a character or allegory in its own right? How do we evoke place, and ensure fair representation of the place and the people we are writing about? Your tutors will encourage you to develop your ideas, characters and environments through writing exercises, reflective practice and diverse readings, with The Hurst’s woodlands and gardens from which to take inspiration. Whether you are just embarking on or are midway through a project, and whether you are working in fiction, non-fiction or hybrid forms, this promises to be an immersive, inspiring week that will demonstrate how ‘place’ is the bedrock of our experience, and how we can translate that to the page.

Residential Writing Course: Advanced Poetry

It is easy to fall into habits as a poet, whether that is relying on the same formal tricks and voicings, or writing the poems we feel others will like at the expense of our own imaginations and interests. It might be that we return to the same themes, or cling to a notion of accessibility that neglects the stranger, murkier kinds of knowledge that poems can reach and hold. Getting beyond these perceived limits can feel risky, discomforting, but it is often on the margins of thought and feeling and language that poetry makes its most novel and profound connections and revelations. Join experienced poets and teachers Jack Underwood and Greta Stoddart on this course which will both challenge and support you to identify your areas of risk, and provide you with the tools to take greater, more illuminating leaps. This course will be most suited to people who have been writing for a while, and who want to bring along their drafts for some fresh impetus and a direction forward, whether that be towards hopes of publication, to share a finished collection with loved ones, or just to reinvigorate your poetic practice.

And how might these broader themes be made more arresting, more graspable, by threading in a smaller and more personal focus? Whether you’re a non-fiction writer looking for ‘narrative’, or a ‘narrative’ writer wondering if your work speaks to anything beyond your personal experience, whether you’re stuck halfway through a manuscript or just flirting with a couple of initial ideas, this five-day course with acclaimed authors Helen Jukes and Noreen Masud focuses on drawing connections between the big and the small, the personal and the political, in narrative non-fiction. Writing exercises will encourage you to zoom in and out: to write both small and personal, and big and expansive.
