Make a Large Willow Bird Feeder

Enjoy a short course learning about the traditional craft of willow weaving. You'll be creating a beautiful and functional bird feeder to take home and hang in your garden. You'll be guided through the processes of creating a cone shape, weaving in a pattern and turning. No experience is required. This workshop is great for beginners who would like a taste of what willow weaving is like. Your tutor for this course is Suzy Williams of The Coppice Co. In 2018 Suzy won a place on the National Coppicing Apprenticeship Scheme, during which she learned vital skills and knowledge from seasoned coppice workers. Now she manages coppice woodlands alongside teaching and selling traditional woodland crafts. Our class sizes are small, so you'll have a chance to engage with the tutor while you work. Saturday 7th March, Friday 24th July and Saturday 14th November, 10am-12noon. Tea/coffee is provided.

Pointing: Theory & Practice – Two-Day Course

A two day course, covering all elements of lime pointing, ideal for anyone looking to learn about the use of lime; whether you’re a listed building owner, an architect, surveyor, or a builder who has not worked with lime previously. Course information: · You’ll learn the history and tradition of this craft, balancing theory and practical examples with demonstrations. · Uncover an in-depth knowledge of the lime cycle; from calcining to matured lime putty, manufacturing, conservation ethics and principles – plus on site practical examples. · We’ll address all aspects of proper lime pointing/repointing practice, from correct raking out & preparation, mortar choices and applications, to after care and finishing techniques. · You’ll also get the chance to do conservation repointing on a listed structure/building. On the second day of the course, we’ll produce a “Hot Lime” mortar used on site. Other useful information: · Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided free of charge · Lunch will be at 1pm-1.30 pm. · An option to purchase tool bundle will be offered booking *The tool bundle is not compulsory you’re welcome to bring your own tools and PPE .However, you will need these items to effectively participate in this course. 2 Day Stained Glass Course (Leaded Method)

Complete a small stained glass panel to take home in this full weekend course. This two day course provides a detailed look at making a stained glass panel, working on a simple design within a template. You'll choose your glass from a selection and the tutor will show you how to cut it to a pattern. You'll then be taught how to cut and shape your lead came, then solder, cement and polish your stained glass. You'll complete a 28cm x 20cm stained glass panel which can be hung or displayed in your home. No experience is required. This course is suitable for adult beginners. Your tutor for this course is Steve Lewis. Steve Lewis trained as a stained glass designer at Swansea Metropolitan University, gaining further experience at Lincoln Cathedral as a trainee in stained glass conservation. In 1998 Steve was awarded a scholarship to study stained glass conservation by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST). In 2012 Steve obtained a Masters in Historic Conservation at Oxford Brookes. In 2014 Steve established SDL Stained Glass, and continues to provide high quality services in design and conservation of stained glass. Our class sizes are small, so you'll have a chance to engage with the tutor while you work. There will be a break for lunch and a mess room to eat lunch in, alternatively there is an on-site café. Introduction to Blacksmithing: Make a candlestick

After that all important chat about safety you'll get straight to work, learning key blacksmithing techniques and then putting them into practice. By the end of the day as well as having learnt the fundamentals of blacksmithing, you’ll also have made a candlestick to take home with you. If you pick up the basics quickly you can progress to more complex decorative techniques, under the supervision of our master blacksmith. This course is suitable for beginners, no prior blacksmithing experience is needed. For those who already have experience with blacksmithing we run an intermediate course - see our events listings for details. Your tutor is David Gregory, an experienced master blacksmith whose work includes original commissions and a wide range of restoration projects. David also occasionally takes commissions for film and television productions. This course is limited to six participants to allow everyone plenty of time with the course tutor. This course will run on the 7th of March and the 3rd of September. There will be a break for lunch and a mess room to eat lunch in, alternatively there is an on-site café. Tea and coffee provided.

Leatherwork: Make a Coin Purse and a Belt

Through an introduction to the craft, participants will learn how to dye, finish and hand stitch leather using the traditional two needle saddle stitch to make a professionally finished coin purse and a belt. This workshop is designed for beginners, no experience required. Your tutor is Ruth Pullan, who learnt her trade from a saddler back in 2012, honing her skills further at the Cumbria School of Saddlery. Her practice has seen her make pieces for craft fairs, shops and galleries and since featuring in “Forge & Carve: Heritage Crafts – The Search for Well-being and Sustainability in the Modern World”. she began to teach too. Since then, she has taught around 400 people the traditional craft of hand stitched leatherwork. Our class sizes are small, so you'll have a chance to engage with the tutor while you work. This leatherwork workshop takes place on Saturday 27 June and Saturday 5 September, 9.30am-4pm. 5-Day Woodcarving Summer School - Discovering the hidden treasure of Misericords

On this intensive 1-week summer school we will take a deep dive into the wonderful, quirky, upside-down world of the misericord, or mercy seat. These seats form part of church choir stalls and are seemingly hidden away but once the seats are flipped up the viewer is treated to a whole array of weird and wonderful master pieces from the 13th century right up to the present day. On the course, guided by your tutor, master carver and heritage crafts wood worker of the year, Thomas Ball. You will start off with an introductory talk showing these weird and wonderful carvings and hear about their origins and where to find them. You will then move onto an introduction on the carving tools you will be using and learn how to use them before doing some warmup exercises to get you used to the timber. Next up you will choose from the examples provided of various casts taken from original misericords. From this point onwards your tutor will guide you through the process of carving from start to finish, creating your very own carving to take home. This course is suitable for beginners and those with experience of carving who are looking to enhance their skills, and the course will be capped to ensure that each student has plenty of tutor time. This course takes place over 5 days, Monday 7th – Friday 11th September, 9am-5pm daily. There will be a break for lunch each day. Tea/coffee is provided, and there is a fantastic café on site.

2 Day Glass Painting Course

You can choose from a selection of designs to paint, or bring along your own image to reproduce onto glass. You'll be working on a 9cm x 15cm piece to make an A5-sized finished panel. You'll learn how to plan the design, mix and apply glass paint. The completed painted piece will then be kiln-fired onto the glass to make permanent, and finally you'll frame your piece into an A5 (148mm x 210mm) size panel for display. No experience is required. This course is suitable for adult beginners. Your tutor for this course is Steve Lewis. The Art of Traditional Faux Marbling

This practical, CPD accredited, course covers everything you need to know to recreate traditional faux marbling, painting flat surfaces to resemble marble, developing your skills in a nurturing studio environment. This course can be combined with the Wood Graining course to make a two-day course. In the morning you’ll learn about the traditional and modern uses of faux marbling as well as surface preparation and mixing glazes. In the afternoon you’ll use the knowledge gained in the morning to create a sample piece. This course is suitable for students of all abilities with a basic understanding of paints, decorating materials and equipment. It's perfect for homeowners and DIYers, professional painters and decorators, conservators and restorers, scenic artists and set designers, building custodians and specifiers, and craftspeople. Your tutor is Simon Nobs of South Coast Studio. Simon has been providing a high quality painting and decorating service for 35+ years to clients across the UK and Europe, focusing on the more artistic side of interior decoration. Simon has designed and created a range of workshops to teach, red-listed traditional decorative paint techniques. Intermediate Blacksmithing

Spend a day learning some of the more complicated skills of blacksmithing. This course is designed to help you with areas of blacksmithing that you are keen to develop or improve, so make sure to let us know techniques and areas you'd like to know more about to help us tailor the course. The number of participants is limited to ensure that everyone has plenty of time to ask questions and spend time one on one with the course tutor. This course is designed for those who have either previously attended one of our introduction to blacksmithing courses, or who have some previous experience blacksmithing. The content the course will be dictated by the skills and techniques the participants are interested in learning, so please indicate these when booking. Plain Lime Plastering

You'll learn: the basics of working with lime, including slaking, mixing and sand selection, and how to safely work with the material; how to fix laths and other substrates; the correct technique for mixing and applying plasters; when and how to use hydraulic lime; an introduction to insulating traditional walls; how to repair lime plaster cracks; and how to limewash. Tutors Sean Wheatley and Michal Wolf are both Master Craftsmen of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers, with many years of experience in traditional plastering techniques. They'll be joined by Marianne Suhr, a chartered building surveyor and co-author of the SPAB's Old House Handbook, with assistance from the Durrant & Daughter team. This introductory course is for anyone interested in learning about plain lime plastering for their home or old buildings under their care. We also welcome conservation officers, heritage consultants, architects, building surveyors and other specifiers too. We keep our classes small and friendly, so you’ll have plenty of attention from our course team. You’ll have your very own plastering bay to practice throughout the course. All materials and tools required for the course will be provided, although you're welcome to bring your own (labelled) if preferred. An Introduction to Plan Lime Plastering is a two day course, running from 16th to 17th October 9.30am-5.30pm on Friday and 9am-4.30pm on Saturday.

Ropework: Make a Celtic knot trivet and basket

In this one day course you’ll learn basic knotting and ropework techniques and terminology, including splicing and general techniques and methods for decorative knotting. In the morning you’ll make a flax trivet, or mat, using a traditional knot pattern, and incorporating the technique of splicing using a Swedish fid. In the afternoon you’ll build on these techniques and make a small round rope basket. This course is suitable for beginners, with no previous experience needed. It would also be well suited to those with experience in crafts such as willow basketry, who would like to explore a different medium and set of techniques. Your tutor for this course is Laurence Knoop. Laurence is a self-taught ropeworker and Basketmaker, who has been working creatively with rope since 2021, drawing on multiple traditional knotting and basketry techniques, adapted to his chosen medium of natural fibre twisted rope. Laurence seeks to work with materials that are as locally produced as possible; to that end, he primarily uses flax rope and twine, sourced from UK ropemakers who use flax fibre grown in Europe. Laurence is a member of Central England Fibreshed and the Heritage Crafts Association. Our class sizes are small, so you'll have a chance to engage with the tutor while you work. Make a Copper Foil Stained Glass Christmas Decoration

7 November: you'll be guided through the process of creating a stained glass Christmas decoration to take home. You'll choose designs and glass from a selection of vibrant colours, and you'll be shown how to cut it to a prepared pattern. You'll then be taught how to cut, shape and place your copper foil, solder and display your decoration with loops and wire. The completed stained glass decoration is yours to take home. The pieces can vary in colour, size and shape. No experience is required. This course is suitable for adult beginners. Your tutor for this course is Steve Lewis.
