Albury Park test pitting and open day

We will be returning for a fourth year of test pitting and excavation this season at Albury Park to investigate the deserted medieval settlement which once stretched across the course of the former road to Shere, on the southern banks of the Tillingbourne. The original village of Albury was displaced in the early 19th century (to its current location to the west), and little now remains standing of the former cottages. However, with the help of geophysical survey, LiDAR and - of course - a large-scale series of test pits spread across the site, we are working to uncover and learn more about the original settlement, which now includes extensive Roman activity! Heritage Open Day: Abinger Research Centre

The Society Library will be open for Heritage Open Day. You are welcome to visit us to talk to the librarian and volunteers about not only the library but also the work being undertaken by the library volunteers and a number of specialist groups of the Society. New members are invited to come along and explore what the Research Centre can offer. Refreshments will be available.

The Roman Studies Group is very pleased that Professor Anthony King, Emeritus Professor at Winchester University and a specialist in both animal bones and Roman archaeology, has kindly agreed to lead our 2026 RSG Study Day at East Horsley Village Hall on Friday 18 September 10.00am-3.30pm. The fee of £20 includes a sandwich lunch, coffee and tea. There is free parking at the Hall.

This talk will narrate the history of the Channel Tunnel through the 18th & 19th centuries, featuring the proposals that were put forward over this period, up to the final decision to build a tunnel. It will describe the main design features of the tunnel, the problems and issues encountered, the build process of the tunnels and cross passages, the ventilation and cooling systems and the dynamics of running a fast train through a narrow tunnel.

A Roman Studies Group Zoom talk by Professor Mike Fulford on 'The Silchester Environs Project'

Mike Fulford has kindly offered to talk to us on 'The Silchester Environs Project'. He led a research team in a five year project to explore the later prehistoric use of the c.140km2 landscape around Silchester Roman Town and its underlying Late Iron Age oppidum. Its base was an extensive desktop assessment containing a vast array of data, both old and new, which was incorporated in a project-wide GIS. It was further supported by various geophysics techniques, lidar, earthwork surveys, walkover reconnaissance, coring exercises and excavation. Much has been discovered so join us to hear more.

Richard studied at Liverpool and Leeds Universities, then worked at geological consultancies and marine / airborne geophysics industries, largely spent in the pursuit of oil and gas, although occasionally looking for cannons in the Caribbean. More recently, Richard ran his own oil and gas exploration business.

A joint RSG/Sussex Archaeology and History Zoom talk by Justine Bayley

A joint Zoom meeting is planned between Roman Studies Group and Surrey Archaeology and History on 20th January. Justine Bayley will be talking on the manufacture and decoration of Roman brooches (from a technical point of view, including gold working in Britain over a longer period). Justine is currently an Honorary Associate Professor at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She researches in archaeometallurgy, other high temperature technologies and archaeology, focusing on northern Europe and the British Isles.
