Belton's Literary Festival

Belton's first Literary Festival will celebrate the amazing collection of books in Belton’s care with a fantastic series of themed events! Festival displays: Grantham Arts House Installation - A display of artworks inspired by a selection of the books in Belton’s collection and created by the talented local artists at Grantham Arts, in collaboration with University of East Anglia and supported by funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (Please note that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, our Conservation and Care days, not all house artworks will be available on the visitor route.) A Story of the Seasons - Pages from A Story of the Seasons, with stunning illustrations by Carolina Rabei, on display in large format along the East Lawn in the gardens. Conservation and Care

Every Tuesday and Wednesday in term time, when some of the house is closed for conservation and rest, around 25% of the mansion's rooms will be open, with a special exhibition to explore. Discover the various risks to the collection and the ways in which our expert team work to counter them. You'll also be able to handle some of the specialist tools we use to care for our objects and see real specimens of the pests we face too. Last entry is at 3pm.

Workshops & Classes

Canvas Work Bookmark Workshop

Come and join other likeminded craft enthusiasts for a relaxing full day workshop in the Old School Village Hall. In this session you will be taught some decorative canvas work stitches using a variety of threads. The finished piece can be used as an attractive bookmark. Don’t worry if you are new to canvas work (or needle work in general) as our expert makers will be on hand to guide you through the process. All materials and equipment will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own sewing kit if you wish. There will be an hour’s break for lunch. Tea and coffee are provided. It is recommended to bring your own lunch. There is a fridge, microwave and kettle for your use. Access to the Stables Café in the Belton Estate grounds is permitted, however it is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the venue. Please make sure to arrive 10 minutes before the start of the session, to allow time to walk from the Belton Estate carpark to the Old School Village Hall.

Woodland Walkabout

Would you like to get outdoors this winter and meet new people? Come and join a walkabout with one of our walk leaders in the beautiful woodlands at Londonthorpe and/or Bellmount Plantation. There’s no need to book, just head along to Londonthorpe Woods Car Park for 10am on the advertised date, where you will find our walk leader waiting to take you on a Woodland Walkabout. The walk will take in some of the magnificent views of Londonthorpe, Grantham, Belton Estate, the Mansion House, and Rose Cottage over by Syston Hall. There is no set route, and we will ask you if there is anywhere in particular you would like to go. We could stroll through Londonthorpe Woods, Alma Woods, Londonthorpe Village and Bellmount Plantation, including a visit to Bellmount Tower. When you finish the walk, you may wish to visit the free-to-enter Grantham House for a well-earned refreshment. The walk will take about 2 hours and will be between 5 to 8 km in length.

Jane Austen has a problem. She has relocated to Chawton to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside but her lively cast of characters is causing her a lot of bother. Come and join Mrs Elton, Mr Collins, Lydia Bennett and many more as they seek to entertain you and fight for their right to be heard in Jane’s novels. This new play is written and performed by Beckis Cooper (the ‘phenomenal’ Unversed - at Stamford Arts, 2024 , Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Chawton House, Lamport Hall; Macbeth for the Tabard Theatre and Grace Notes for The Old Red Lion/King’s Head and Edinburgh Fringe.)
