The impressive mansion house, built in 1760 in the style of Robert Adam was gifted to the Royal Burgh of Ayr in 1968. A generous bequest of funds from the late Mrs Mary Maclaurin enabled the conversion of the coach house and stables into an art gallery in 1976 and the ongoing acquisition of a unique collection of contemporary 20th and 21st century art. The Gallery has full disabled access, from a clearly marked parking space right outside the entrance arch, to smooth access to all five galleries, either across the courtyard or through the galleries themselves to the Tearoom and disabled toilet.
