Third Sunday: what brings me closer to God? With Andy Locke

Sunday 20th September 7-8pm Free, no need to book Andy Locke begins our Third Sunday series by talking about the impact that the painting The Light of the World has on him, and how the music of The Waterboys expresses something of the nature of his relationship to God. Come and join us as we look at the painting, listen to music, read lyrics together and reflect on our own responses to these. The Light of the World William Holman Hunt 1853 Keble College Oxford Sunday 18th October 7-8pm Free, no need to book Gillian Philips will explore how visual thinking and praying can bring us closer to God. She will introduce the practice of Ekphrasis: an approach to visual art that engages with it using vivid, detailed, even poetic verbal description. Come and join us as we reflect on visual art together and seek to respond in words and silence. Avenue at Chantilly by Paul Cezanne, 1888, National Gallery London Sunday 17th November 7-8pm Free, no need to book Cath Williamson will share a number of poems and photographs of the landscape which inspired the priest and poet R.S. Thomas. She writes: “His poems have brought me closer to God since I first began reading them over 30 years ago. Of particular resonance are those written when he was Vicar of Aberdaron on the Lyn Peninsula. He wrote about the wild landscape of that part of Wales in poems which explore his search for God, his struggles with prayer and the importance of silence”.
