Hidden Histories

Exploring the hidden histories of the National Civil War Centre: Join poet and artist in residence Leanne Moden for a series of free, friendly creative writing workshops. This is a rare opportunity to get up close with the museum's collections and reflect on both personal and national histories through creative writing. Take a trip through history, write poems and stories, and have a grand old time! These workshops are suitable for adults (18+) of all ages and abilities. No previous experience necessary—if you’re interested in writing stories and poems, we’d love to see you there! You do not need to attend every session. Join as many or as few as you like, as each two-hour workshop will be on a different topic and include brief tours of selected museum galleries.

But if you're not keen on drinking wine, why not join us for an alcohol-free evening and focus solely on the crime! What to expect: • A gripping deep dive into real crimes of passion from the 18th & 19th Centuries • Wines & Crimes-themed quiz with devilishly good prizes • Try and figure out why the three (alcoholic) are matched to each dramatic story • Unpack the motives, the fallout, and influence of the supernatural and folk beliefs! Wines & Crimes is a fun, interactive and wickedly entertaining night for true crime fans (and wine lovers alike). About your hosts: Angela Muir is an academic historian specialising in histories of crime and deviance in England and Wales during the long eighteenth-century. Sara Hobday is a sommelier, event manager and former owner/operator of Vin Van Cymru, a wine shop and events company in Cardiff.

Heritage Open Days: Behind the Scenes at the Resource Centre

A rare opportunity to look behind the scenes at the museum’s reserve collection. Join our friendly curator to explore thousands of years of Newark’s history through the 90,000 objects held at our Resource Centre. Lift the curtains on our hidden art collection and look closely at objects from stone-age hand axes to a Victorian prison door. Please note the following: Participants will need to bring photo ID with them (such as a passport or driving licence) and show this on arrival. On site parking is very limited. Participants will be contacted with further information about parking location. Please wear a warm fleece or jacket as the environment is temperature controlled and can feel cold. Only a one part of the tour is wheelchair accessible. Bags brought to the site will be left in a separate room.
