Upcoming events at Bowes Railway

Bowes Railway began in 1826 as a colliery route carrying coal from County Durham towards the Tyne. Its earliest section was designed by George Stephenson, and the completed line combined locomotives with steep rope-worked inclines.

Now a museum, it offers guided tours, family activity and volunteering in engineering, maintenance and gardening. The surviving standard-gauge cable system makes this railway a real draw, in the mechanical as well as historical sense.
