Join BCMG pianist John Reid for a 30‑minute, drop‑in performance on Angela de la Cruz’s extraordinary Upright Piano (1999), presented at Ikon Gallery as part of Angela de la Cruz: UPRIGHT. Upright Piano is a re‑made instrument: de la Cruz joined and re‑strung a whole piano with the bottom part of another so it can only be played at standing height. Restored for this exhibition, it offers a rare chance to encounter the artwork not only as sculpture, but as a functioning, reimagined instrument. John Reid performs music by Kurtág, Haydn and C.P.E. Starting and finishing at Midlands Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park, this event invites you to be part of 111 people travelling by bicycle on a guided route through Birmingham, stopping at a series of green spaces for live performances by BCMG musicians. Participants will visit Highbury Hall and Birmingham Brewing Company, where short, pop-up concerts unfold in the open air. Please note you will need your own bike to take part in this event and have proficient bike handling skills. The Relatives is a musical documentary theatre that follows the family history of composer Sergej Newski. Based on interviews with his grandmother Anna Timofeevna Kravchenko and unique Super 8 recordings from 1968, the result is a multimedia narration across four generations, from 1912 to the present. The form is radical: a video conference between times and augmented reality as a dramaturgic principle. Interviews and documentary materials transform into a conversation that blurs the lines between past and present. Creative Composing Lab - Autumn 26

Compose for BCMG musicians! Sunday 15 November 2026, 10.00am to 6.00pm 14 - 18 years olds CBSO Centre, Berkley Street, B1 2LF Creative Composing Lab is an exciting opportunity for young people aged 14 to 18 (school years 10 - 13) to compose for BCMG musicians guided by the expert knowledge of composer David Horne from Royal Northern College of Music. If you love creating music or you need ideas for your GCSE, BTEC or A-level composition, Creative Composing Lab is for you. Participants need some music notation skills. At the end of the workshop day there will be a performance music created during the day for family and friends. The concert will also be recorded and shared after the event. Places are free, but need to be booked in advance. A suggested donation of £12 per participant will ensure we can continue our workshop programme.
