Level 2: Intro to Performing Improv

13th April – 18th May | Mondays | 18:30 – 21:00 Improvisation happens all over the place: at work, at home, when you’re messing around with your mates. Whenever you do something that you didn’t plan in advance, try something just to have a go, or join in with something that looks fun – you’re improvising! But what about improvising in front of people on a stage? Improv as a performance can be a scary prospect, but it can also be tremendously fun and hugely rewarding! Following on from our hugely popular Discovering Improv course, this six-week course will immerse you in the fundamentals of improvising for an audience through games, exercises, and scenes. Our experienced facilitators will guide and support you on your journey towards performing. Is this course for me? Intro to Performing is an introduction to improvisation as a performance artform, aimed at beginners – no experience is needed! If you aren’t sure about performing, or want to learn about improv from the beginning, try our Discovering Improv course. This is the course for you if: You’ve completed our Discovering Improv course and want to take the next step You’re new to improv and want to learn the fundamentals of improvisation for an audience You learned improv elsewhere and want to start learning with the Bristol Improv Theatre School Class Details This is a 6-week course. Sessions are held weekly (on the same evening) and last 2.5 hours.

LGBTQ+ Improv Drop-In

Saturdays | 14:00 – 16:00 This is a fun and friendly workshop led by LGBTQ+  instructors for people who are LGBTQ+, and is open to all levels. You can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context.  Sessions will focus on fun, representing your own identity(ies) in improv, and connecting with other improvisers. Why are we running these workshops? Whilst we aim to be an LGBTQ+ friendly venue and believe that improv is an empowering artform for everyone, we recognise that for many reasons – not least wanting to avoid stereotypes and prejudice – some people may not feel confident or even safe to be open about their LGBTQ+ identity in classes or when improvising. LGBTQ+ improvisers may worry about (or even have experienced) being judged, misunderstood, or stereotyped for their identity, or they may be put off by heteronormative bias (the expectation that heterosexual desire and relationships and binary gender are the default) in improvised scenes. The aim of these workshops is to build community and increase visibility, and make space for LGBTQ+ stories and experience in improv. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation, as part of a supportive community. A note on the term “LGBTQ+”: The Bristol Improv Theatre uses the term LGBTQ+ as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identities outside of heterosexuality and the gender binary.
