Spectral Lures by Carlos Serrano / AV Showcase

A haunting and transformative experience, Spectral Lures challenges the line between the natural and the artificial, asking not just what we see, but how we perceive. Spectral Lures is an experimental live audiovisual performance by Carlos Serrano that immerses audiences in a shifting space between illusion, memory and simulation. A flickering digital ghost emerges from the static of human data, infiltrating the sensory environment and transforming the architecture into a living and responsive system. Blending real-time technologies such as Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner, the work unfolds as a 40-minute fulldome experience powered by 16.1 spatial audio. As the signal evolves, it adopts the audience itself as part of its network, blurring perception, dissolving boundaries, and redefining immersion as a psychological state. Spectral Lures expands Serrano’s practice into a shared, collective space. Alongside the performance, the project includes an artist talk, inviting audiences to explore the creative and ethical dimensions of live XR, synthetic vision and immersive storytelling. CULTVR OPEN DAY Join us for a special day as we open our doors and invite you to explore everything CULTVR has to offer. Experience our immersive arts centre through a programme of XR installations, digital art, fulldome cinema, hands-on workshops and live performances. Meet the team, discover new creative technologies and take part in a day of making, sharing and exploration. What's On 360° Workshops and Interactive Installations Fulldome Films Live Music Curated by Sound Progression Workshops 12pm - 2pm | Collage Workshop Create a collaborative artwork that will become part of a special showcase inside the dome later in the day. 12pm - 3pm | Mark Eaglen Interactive Showcase Come and experience an interactive artwork in the dome by artist Mark Eaglen. 2pm - 4pm | Animation Workshop Explore the fundamentals of animation and help bring ideas to life through movement and storytelling. 4pm | Collage Workshop Dome Showcase See the outcomes of the day's creative workshop presented inside the dome. 3-5pm | Music by Sound Progression Artists from Sound Progression will perform in the garden. This event is open to all ages and welcomes curious minds, creative thinkers and anyone interested in exploring art, technology and immersive experiences. Sunrise on Other Worlds by Squidsoup – immersive installation

Sunrise on Other Worlds is an abstract immersive installation and performance by Squidsoup that envisions the sunrise and sunset cycles of imagined alien worlds. It transports audiences across distant terrains - gas giants, molten metallic landscapes, barren moons - in an unfolding, shifting rhythm of their days. Extending ideas explored in Squidsoup's Sola, Light Henge and Three Volumes, the piece takes the form of a looping, multi-movement experience inspired conceptually by Holst's The Planets, and by the dramatic atmospheres of J. M. W. Turner and John Martin. Drones and grand distorted guitars drift and evolve across a custom octophonic sound system, surrounding audiences in an immersive sonic field, while fields of colour emerge, dissolve, and shift between light and darkness - creating an environment that feels both monumental and intimate. Sunrise on Other Worlds translates the complexity of other worlds into sensory experience, accessible through presence, perception, and imagination. It invites reflection on the vastness of the universe and our place within it, and offers a space for wonder. Land Empathy / Richard Chappell Dance

Land Empathy by Richard Chappell is a powerful interdisciplinary performance that combines live dance with 360° projection, bringing together the film Heart Land (BBC Arts) and Welsh climate change data from Living Wales. Rooted in themes of intergenerational activism and humanity’s environmental impact, the work transforms data into a visceral choreographic experience. Developed through Chappell’s Clore Leadership Fellowship with the Centre for Alternative Technology, in collaboration with Dr Richard Lucas (Aberystwyth University), the piece responds directly to mapped ecological changes across Wales. Since its 2024 commission by Stomping Ground, Land Empathy has toured internationally, including appearances at Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, Dance International Glasgow, and Sismograf in Spain. Inspired by the urgency of the climate crisis, the work explores how movement can deepen emotional and spiritual connections to the natural world. Through symbolic acts, such as dancers covering themselves in white and red clay, it expresses grief, responsibility, and compassion, ultimately embracing a message of resilience and renewal in the face of environmental loss. For its presentation at CULTVR, the evening unfolds across three distinct parts. It opens with Timewasters, a 20-minute interdisciplinary performance by Faye Tan and George Hampton Wale, exploring outdoor leisure and personal narrative.
