Holst The Planets, Suk and Grund

A concert featuring the combined orchestras of Cambridge Sinfonietta and Junges Sinfonieorchester Aachen performing a programme of music initially performed in Aachen on the first leg of this exciting exchange project. The popular and atmospheric Holst’s Planets Suite calls for a large orchestra and explores the characters of the seven planets of the solar system. The Czech composer Josef Suk was a pupil and son in law to Antonin Dvorak. His Scherzo Fantastique is a playful and lively composition. Bert Grund was a German composer particularly know for composing film music. This concert is the UK premier of his Divertimento for Horn with soloist Theo Wiemes. More About Cambridge Sinfonietta and Junges Sinfonieorchester Aachen Cambridge Sinfonietta provides amateur musicians with the opportunity to play a broad repertoire of orchestral works in a friendly and supportive setting, performing a concert at the end of each term. Junges Sinfonieorchesterhas been enriching Aachen's music scene for nearly 50 years with performances by musicians of all ages and professions.

Michael Foyle & Tom Carroll join EAChO for Brahms Double concerto

The East Anglia Chamber Orchestra returns to the West Road Concert Hall with an attractive and ambitious programme directed by the gifted and inspiring Toby Purser. The concert will open with Rossini’s romantic and exciting William Tell Overture, describing life in the Swiss Alps. We are then joined by TWO internationally acclaimed soloists : Michael Foyle and Thomas Carroll performing the monumental and bittersweet Double Concerto for violin and ‘cello by Brahms. Written after his last symphony, the concerto is an elderly composer’s gift of reconciliation to a friend being performed by friends. In a more light-hearted vain, the concert resumes with the colourful and lively Four Scottish Dances by Malcolm Arnold, written for the BBC Light Music Festival in 1957. It was the warmth and richness of Italy that inspired the young Mendelssohn to compose his A major Fourth Symphony, which he described as the “jolliest piece I have ever done”. Passion, romance, friendship, dancing, and a tour of European culture with talented companions – what a divine combination! 40th Anniversary Concert - Season 1

The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge, conducted by Darrell Davison, performs a exciting programme of early 20th-century English works. Edward Elgar's Cockaigne Overture (1901) is followed by John Ireland's Piano Concerto (1930), featuring star soloist Christos Fountos. The second half of the concert comprises William Walton's monumental Symphony No. 1 (1935). The local charity which will benefit from this concert is Petals: The Baby Loss Counselling Charity. more about The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge The Cambridge Orchestra was founded in 1987 by the late Charles Sampson in response to requests for a new symphony orchestra which could harness the very talented players and music teachers within the Eastern Counties to perform large-scale classical repertoire to the highest standards. Many internationally acclaimed soloists have performed with the Cambridge Orchestra: these have included Tasmin Little, Piers Lane, Timothy Hugh, and David Campbell. The Orchestra has also presented Gala Ballet with Wayne Sleep and members of National Youth Ballet of Great Britain, and has participated regularly in the Cambridge Music Festival. In 2010 the governing organisation was changed into a charitable trust, registered with the Charity Commission, and the opportunity was taken to adopt a new name for the orchestra to commemorate its founder - The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge.

PROKOFIEV SONATAS 1-5 (Sonata no 4, op 29)

Prokofiev's powerful fourth sonata dates from the same year, 1917, as the third sonata, but is a dramatic three-movement narrative in contrast to the latter's single movement. The last of the composer's sonatas written before leaving Russia, it is similar to the third sonata from his student sketches. The sonata integrates Russian fairy-tale elements, neo-Baroque gestures and neo-classical wit, partly echoing the 'Classical Symphony' also of 1917, and at the same time drawing on the mysterious style of Medtner's 'Fairy-tale sonata'. The result is a grippingly expressive narrative culminating in one of Prokofiev's most dazzling finales. The concert is introduced by the beautifully romantic 'Twelve Sketches' of Prokofiev's teacher, Reinhold Glière, who outlived his famous pupil and had a distinguished career as a Professor of Composition at the Moscow Conservatoire. Two arresting and intricate late works by Gabriel Fauré set Prokofiev's fourth sonata in a contemporary context. more about David Christophersen Oslo-born David Christophersen, Artistic Director of the Cambridge Concert Artists series at West Road Concert Hall, has performed throughout the UK, including the Woburn Abbey Festival, Bristol's St. George's, Edinburgh's Reid Hall, Oxford's Holywell Music Room, London's St John's Smith Square and broadcast for BBC Radio 3.

The Sicilian Vespers is the name given to a rebellion in Sicily in 1282 against the rule of the Angevin king Charles I of Naples, who had taken control of the island with Papal support in 1266. It was the beginning of the eponymous War of the Sicilian Vespers. The Sevilla Barber was one of the earliest Italian operas to be performed in America and premiered at the Park Theatre in New York City on 29 November 1825. Rossini's Barber has proven to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all opere buffe; even after two hundred years, its popularity on the modern opera stage attests to that greatness. La Traviata is an Italian opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, after Alexandre Dumas, fils's novel La dame aux camélias, published in 1848.. The title "La traviata" means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or perhaps more figuratively, The Fallen One. Although a failure at its premiere, the opera soon established itself and became one of the best-loved and most frequently performed, recorded and filmed of all operas.

Under the baton of Peter Britton the Orchestra of Britton's Peers (leader Hazel Keelan) will be performing an intriguing programme of music with pianists Ivan Garford and Frances Wyatt, culminating in the exciting Concerto for Two Pianos by Poulenc. Profits from this concert will go to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). EACH aim to ensure the best possible quality of life for babies, children and young people who are facing life limiting conditions. Care is available 24/7 and, depending on a family’s needs and wishes, can be provided in one of the three hospices, in the family home, in hospital or in the wider community. This ensures every family receives care somewhere they feel safe and comfortable. The lifelong support EACH provides includes specialist nursing, therapies and ongoing wellbeing support for families. PROKOFIEV SONATAS 1-5 (Sonata no 5, op 135)

Prokofiev's Fifth Sonata was the only sonata completed after the fourth in 1917 and the War Sonatas, Nos. 6-8, which were begun in 1939. Although the composer was pleased with the work, audiences initially were less so, since its refinement, neo-classical poise and modernistic features were less arresting to the public than the brilliant energy of the second, third and fourth sonatas with which the composer tended to couple the fifth in his recitals. Prokofiev revised the sonata in 1952, largely to clarify its textures and shape, rather than to carry out radical re-writing of the whole, and felt particularly satisfied with the result; and it is in this version that the sonata is performed in this recital. The elegance and beauty of this work are striking. Fauré's thirteenth Barcarolle and thirteenth Nocturne complete the first half of this recital: brilliant, poetic and complex masterpieces that predate Prokofiev's fifth sonata by a couple of years. Fauré's description to his wife of the Barcarolle as 'un petit morceau de piano' is surely delicate self-mockery. Martinu's Sonata No. 1 from 1953 is a hidden treasure of the twentieth century. Its visionary power stands almost alone, and when played with Prokofiev's 6th sonata, as tonight's performer has frequently done, it is in no way overshadowed by the latter.
