Inês Alves F. Soares (violin) & Baichuan Hui (piano)

Newly formed violin-piano duo by Inês Alves F. Soares and Baichuan Hui present a programme featuring works by Judith Weir, Mozart, Arvo Pärt, Lutosławski, Paul Schoenfield, and James MacMillan, connected through their rhythmic vitality, expressive intensity, and richly distinctive sound worlds. Passionate about collaborating with contemporary composers and championing new music, the duo will also perform a newly commissioned work by Royal Conservatoire of Scotland composer, Andrew Jacob, who brings an energetic freshness to the programme. Sarah King and John Merrill

Sarah King is a trained actor, chanteuse, street performer, and dancer. She has appeared in speakeasies—both dubious and prestigious—across New York and beyond, and held a decade-long residency at the Top of the Standard Hotel. She has performed as a singer in Sleep No More, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the film A Complete Unknown. Most often, she performs jazz in New York City with a rotating cast of swinging musicians. She has released two albums with Tulip or Turnip—(2021) and The Masquerade is Over (2023)—and appears on Stéphane Wrembel’s Django New Orleans recordings.

A Waiting Game

A Waiting Game is a verbatim play that foregrounds overlooked experiences of breast cancer beyond dominant “pink ribbon” narratives. Using an intersectional lens, it centres marginalised voices and personal testimonies often absent from mainstream discourse. The play explores cultural disparities through a South Asian perspective, LGBTQ+ identities, infertility, mental health, and addiction, as well as the impacts of medication. It also addresses cancer during COVID-19, male experiences of a feminised illness, relationship breakdown, financial hardship, and the older person’s experience of breast cancer. Performed by professional actors alongside participants with lived experience gathered over a four-year research project, the work powerfully reflects the complexity of living with cancer.
