Book Launch: Tom Pow, The Vulnerability of Precious Things: Encounters with Simone Weil

20.04.26. 6.30–8pm. Free. Join us as we launch Tom Pow’s The Vulnerability of Precious Things: Encounters with Simone Weil, new from MARISCAT PRESS and MOLECULAR PRESS of Geneva. Simone Weil (1909-1943) was one of the twentieth-century’s most significant thinkers and inspirational figures. Her philosophy and how she lived her life are intimately connected. Her ideas on affliction, attention and force are as vital now as they were when she described them, while the harshness of her life still moves us. Tom Pow’s poems (or ‘encounters’) engage with her short life and the times through which she lived. The resulting work – varied, thought-provoking and moving – is a work of imaginative mpathy that makes clear Weil’s relevance to the world today. Tom Pow was born in Edinburgh in 1950. He has published many poetry pamphlets and collections, including In the Becoming: New and Selected Poems (Polygon 2009), Recent collections are Naranjas (Galileo 2021) and Svetlena’s Dance: Triptychs (Mariscat 2022). He lives in Dumfries. A key element in Tom Pow’s poetry is his exploration of diverse lives and landscapes.

As we try to comprehend what the future might look like, might be like – in 50 years, 100 years, more – we would not be able to without glancing backwards into a time that far predates us. Ilana Halperin Join us for Earth Day  to celebrate two concurrent exhibitions that explore our place in geological time – Ilana Halperin: What Is Us and What Is Earth (Fruitmarket) and Earth Matters (Inverleith House Gallery, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh) – in the context of the tercentenary of Scottish geologist James Hutton (1726-1797). Artists Ilana Halperin and Louise Bennetts, writer and performer Karine Polwart, and soil scientist Colin Campbell (Chief Executive of the James Hutton Institute) discuss Hutton’s legacy in the context of contemporary creative practice.    The conversation is chaired by Susanna Beaumont, curator of Earth Matters. The Shell Chart a course through unfamiliar sonic landscapes and discover strange new musical territories at the borderlands between electronics and jazz, classical and experimental. Featuring the improvisational talents of Leigh Chorlton on drums, Andrew Ostler on saxophone, and Simon Kirby on modular synthesiser. More info on The Shell GAMING (Alan Bryden) is the sound of crunchy 8bit funk meeting lush melodious electronica. It’s soulful IDM colliding with rhythmic machine vibes and pulsating electro that makes your brain race and your body move. It’s a thoughtful soundtrack that explores the introspective and imaginary spaces between club culture and home listening. Alan also co-runs Glasgow’s monthly ATTACK RELEASE. More info on GAMING November Group performs a suite of original modern electronic classical music. Two vocalists deliver classical style lieder and spoken word poetry. The music itself ranges from rhythmic motorik repetition via reflective keyboard duets to uptempo Bartok-inspired ensemble pieces. The Night With... Ensemble Offspring

25.04.26. Doors 7.30pm for 8pm start. £6–12 Ensemble Offspring return to The Night With… from Australia after their first Scottish tour in 2019 with programme combining music from Scotland and Australia. The programme features the world premiere of Beneath the Surface by Matthew Whiteside, an audio-visual work exploring humanity’s impact on the seabed through footage he has shot scuba diving and edited by his long time collaborator Marisa Zanotti. Alongside this will be a new work by Australian composer Alice Chance and works drawn from Ensemble Offspring’s award winning Songbirds project where composers respond to the songs of Australian birds. Ensemble Offspring is Australia’s leading new music group, standing at the forefront of musical innovation. Led by internationally acclaimed percussionist Claire Edwardes OAM, the ensemble unites the country’s most fearless and virtuosic instrumentalists with a core “pierrot plus one” line up of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion. Together, they create “visceral, joyous music” (Sydney Morning Herald) through kaleidoscopically varied performances that blaze a trail for Australian music.
