Workshop - Stone Carving With Paul Maggs

Spend a day learning the art of stone carving in the unique and inspiring setting of Rockaway Park. It is the perfect place for anyone who enjoys creativity, craft and a relaxed atmosphere. The workshop begins at 9.30am with a short introduction to the tools, materials and techniques you will be using. You can choose from a range of simple, intermediate or more detailed pre‑printed patterns, or design your own if you prefer. Once you have chosen your design, you will learn how to transfer it onto the stone and make your first carving cuts. Your tutor for the day is Paul Maggs, an experienced craft mason and long‑standing teacher of stone masonry. Paul has a calm and encouraging teaching style, and he is skilled at helping beginners feel confident with the tools. He will be on hand throughout the day to offer guidance, demonstrations and support whenever you need it. We keep the day relaxed, with a tea break around 11am and a lunch break between 1pm and 2pm. The workshop usually finishes at 4pm, or earlier if everyone completes their piece. All materials, tools and PPE are provided. By the end of the session you will head home with your own hand‑carved stone creation. TICKETS HERE

TOWER TOURS AND CREAM TEAS Occurring Sunday 02 August 2026, Sunday 09 August 2026, Sunday 16 August 2026, Sunday 23 August 2026, Sunday 30 August 2026 at for 3 hours Venue St Cuthbert's, Wells Address St Cuthbert Street Wells, BA5 2AW, United Kingdom Once again this August, St Cuthbert’s is inviting visitors to climb the church tower to see the amazing views of Wells and the surrounding countryside. Not only do visitors have the fun of climbing up the 166 steps of the spiral staircase and gazing over the parapet at the top, they will also meet bell-ringers, find out about bell-ringing and have a go themselves. And, of course, there are memories of Hot Fuzz and that nasty incident …..! The tower is open on every Sunday afternoon in August with tours running on the hour from 2.00 until 4.00. Numbers are limited so it is advisable to book beforehand. Regrettably, children under the age of eight are not allowed to climb up. The first tours are on Sunday 2nd August. Cream Teas (£5.00) are also available on those Sundays: to help recovery after climbing up(!); for those who don’t fancy climbing up; and for anyone who would just like a cream tea in a beautiful setting on a summer afternoon!
