25–26 July Near Castleton (Scarborough)

Not every listing gets a golden ticket

We check the usual frankly silly number of local websites, then look for events that feel rainy-day friendly: cinemas, theatres, talks, workshops, galleries, concerts, cosy venues, and anything less likely to involve standing in a muddy field making brave weather noises.

Happening Saturday 25 July to Sunday 26 July.
Picked for Castleton (Scarborough), not somewhere halfway across the county.
Only Local Gems and Curated venues make the cut, because standards are still a thing.
Listings with proper descriptions get bumped up the list. Three words and a shrug will not do.

| Benjamin Grosvenor piano Beethoven Theme and Variations on Rule Britannia Beethoven7 Variations on God Save the King Schumann Fantasie in C Scriabin Sonata no.2 in G-sharp minor Chopin Sonata no.2 in B-flat minor ‘A pianist to make you sigh with joy’ (New York Times) sets familiar tunes and big ideas side by side. Beethoven’s variations on English patriotic songs are alert and witty, testing ceremonial melodies with sharp intelligence. Schumann follows with music of restless imagination and passion. After the interval, a sonata by Scriabin shifts between dream and turbulence before Chopin ends the evening in music of stark contrasts and unforgettable intensity. ‘Benjamin Grosvenor is a genius who has reached the height of his interpretative powers’ The Spectator Interval bar
