Silly bees and nightly cares: Dowland songs

2026 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of John Dowland, Elizabethan England's greatest lute-songster. In his lifetime, Dowland enjoyed widespread fame, aided by his four books of songs, published over twenty years to spectacular success. Dowland's Foundry presents this music in the technicolour for which it was imagined: as songs for four voices, so written for "all of the parts, or either of them severally, to be sung to the lute." Unlike the more common singerand- accompanist combo, this realisation bears more affinity to a family argument, or to a headful of unquiet thoughts: a perfect vehicle for the mintings of Dowland's wry, loving, and irreverent genius.

back to Upcoming events at Oxburgh Estate Skip to content A Regency Romance After decades apart, a young honeymooning couple have been reunited – their portraits lovingly restored using traditional centuries-old crafting techniques. Free event (admission applies) In 1823, Agnes Bedingfeld was engaged and later married to Thomas Molyneux-Seel. Following their marriage, the couple embarked upon a year long 'Grand Tour' honeymoon across Europe and whilst there, commissioned portraits by renowned artist Ferdinando Cavaller. The paintings were bequeathed to the National Trust in 2022 and over the last 12 months have undergone restoration work as well as the creation of a new frame for Agnes using centuries -old red listed crafts. To celebrate their long awaited return to Oxburgh, the portraits of Agnes and Thomas will take centre stage in our new exhibition ‘A Regency Romance’ which explores the language of love during the era and their relationship through extracts from letters, diaries and collection objects, including a pair of miniature portraits of the couple painted shortly after their engagement and a set of decanters and glasses that they purchased on honeymoon. Oxburgh Hall is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 17 January and daily from Saturday 14 February, from 10.30am – 3pm (last entry at 2.15pm).

Bringing Esther Home

From Saturday 20 June, the Queen Esther tapestry will be on display inside Oxburgh Hall at Oxburgh Estate. Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with the tapestry which will be displayed free from glass, in an open frame. For young detectives, there will also be an Esther themed family trail in the Kitchen Garden to celebrate her triumphant return.
