Summer of Play at Washington Old Hall 2026

Fun fact: this year marks the 250th anniversary of US Independence as well as the 20th anniversary of the Sunderland and DC friendship agreement! So in honour of Washington's connection with America some of our Summer of Play activities have more of a US theme. Self-led activities will be available in the gardens every day (Thursday - Monday). Get competitive with all the family with some classic lawn games such as sack racing, skittles (the ancestor of bowling) or try out the American game of cornhole. There will be lots of ways to play, maybe even try building a den! Keep a look out on our event page for a range of organised pop-up fun coming to Washington Old Hall this summer (dates TBC). North East Festival of Blossom 2026: Blossom Through a Wearside Lens photography exhibition

As part of the North East Festival of Blossom, and in connection with the Sunderland Connecting Through Nature project, Sunderland City Council’s Sustainable Regeneration Team organised a photography competition: Blossom Through a Wearside Lens - Celebrating the beauty of nature in Sunderland. The competition closes on 31 May. Come along to see a selection of photographs from the winner and runners up displayed around Washington Old Hall gardens. Free, normal admission applies. Festival of Blossom is supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery with fund awarded from Postcode Earth Trust.
