What's on in Thorne Moor

Devon, England

Thorne Moor sits quietly in Devon, a place where the rain knows how to let go but never forgets its manners. Without any big venues on our list, we rely on the local pubs and community halls that have been holding court since before Wi-Fi was invented. It is a simple setup, yet perfectly adequate for a good night out or a rainy afternoon with the neighbours. The village green often hosts market stalls when the sun decides to make an appearance, while the church hall usually has something cooking in its kitchen on a Friday evening. You do not need a ticket to find a laugh here, just a willingness to chat with someone standing next to you at the bus stop. Near Here keeps track of what is going on so you can skip the rain and head straight for the warmth.

Growing Perennial Vegetables – The Future of Farming and Food

We’re excited for you to join us for a very special event at Birch Farm, of The Collective at Woolsery, marking the end of our first full year growing perennial vegetables at scale and developing them as a viable and delicious food source. At Birch Farm, we believe perennialfoods will play a crucial role in building resilient, biodiverse farming systems in the face of a changing climate. By integrating Food Forest principles and perennial growing systems into our existing market garden model—rooted in Natural Farming and agroforestry—we aim to inspire others to reimagine how we grow, cook, and eat. Why Attend? Over the past year (2025), we’ve been on a journey of discovery—experimenting with a wide range of perennial vegetables, collaborating with chefs, and learning firsthand about their potential in the field and the kitchen. This event is a chance to see the process in action, taste the results, and join a growing community of growers, chefs, and food lovers who are excited by the possibilities of perennial crops. What to Expect: Reflections from the Field: What worked, what didn’t, and what we’ve learned about growing perennials in a market garden setting. Tasting & Cooking Demos: Sample dishes prepared with perennial vegetables by our Head Chef Toby Neal, alongside Jack Feeny of No Mise en Plastic—showcasing new flavour profiles and cooking techniques.
