Sandquay sits quietly in Devon where the sea air keeps the cobblestones dry and the gossip flowing. With no venues listed on our books right now, we simply point you toward whatever festival or market might be rolling through the county this week. The locals know exactly which stall has the best scones before anyone else does. We keep an eye on the horizon for new pop-ups so you don't have to guess where the fun is going next. Just check back here when a fairground sets up near the cliffs or a theatre company decides to bring a play to the village green. Head of the Dart- SUP Challenge

The Head of the Dart SUP Challenge is an annual event in April and sees more than 250 paddlers taking part, making it the largest SUP event in the UK. Each year, paddlers come together to complete the 14km course along the River Dart taking in the beautiful Devon countryside running between the historic town of Dartmouth and Totnes, alternating directions every year. It is traditionally seen as the season opener, with paddlers travelling from all of the country, and further afield! Paddlers have the option to take part in the challenge either as part of the race or leisure fleet. Prizes are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the race fleets, with a raffle (made up with donations from our sponsors) available for those taking part in the leisure fleet. All participants collect a finishers medal at the end and timings published on our website. The event is seen as a “must do” and regularly sells out within minutes! Due to the good old British weather, paddlers can be faced with conditions from sunshine and rain to wind. As a result, we take the safety of everyone very seriously and work with the local rowing clubs to ensure safety boats are provided along the route. Contingency plans are also in place should conditions be unsuitable, meaning alternative course routes are used.

Talk- Vernon MacAndrew: From the Dart to the Red Sea

Vernon MacAndrew’s life extended far beyond Dartmouth. During the 1920s he undertook a series of remarkable expeditions, travelling widely in search of shells and natural history specimens. His journeys took him to Egypt, the Red Sea and the Philippines, where he built up a significant shell collection later bequeathed to the Natural History Museum. These travels also produced a remarkable body of photographs, many in early colour, documenting people, landscapes and wildlife across several continents. In 1939 MacAndrew embarked on a very different voyage — a naval reconnaissance mission in the Atlantic involving Madeira and the islands of Macaronesia, undertaken with retired Admirals in the tense months before the outbreak of war. This illustrated talk by Jonathan Turner explores these expeditions, combining adventure, science and geopolitics.
