About this event
Unexplained Deaths at the Villa Talk by Michael Fulford Over many years of excavation at the villa, archaeologists have uncovered a number of disarticulated human remains. Scientific dating now suggests that these individuals may belong either to a single dramatic event in the late Roman period or to several very closely spaced episodes. In the absence of any formal burial, raising difficult questions about the circumstances of their deaths. In this talk, Michael will explore the possible explanations for these findings. Was it disease or the likelihood of multiple killings ,potentially even a massacre. We will look at what archaeology can and cannot tell us, and how these discoveries fit into the wider historical context of the late Roman era. The session will also include an update on our ongoing research into the possible location of a Roman harbour associated with the site, including preliminary results from the coring work carried out last year. Date: 9th May - Time: 3.00–4.00pm - Price £8.50 per person To book
