Monthly Mornings: How to Prepare your Garden (Plants) for Winter

Traditionally we used to “put the garden to bed for the year,” or in more recent jargon “Winterise it” Is there really a large list of Autumn jobs to do before we batten down the hatches for winter? Is it OK to do a bit of winter gardening, or should sleeping gardens be left to rest? In this gardening workshop, we will look at what are the essential gardening tasks required to protect our plants and soil from the worst of the winter weather and what tasks are better left until spring. For those of us who have no intention of staying out of the garden over winter, what gardening jobs can we do? You Will Learn · How to protect your plants from damaging winds· How to prune penstemon and shrubby salvias to prevent wind rock· How to get tender and half-hardy plants through the winter· When to cut your perennials back· The benefits of an Autumn mulch and what you can use· How to take hardwood cuttings and other enjoyable winter jobs.· All you need to know about buying bare root plants. What’s Included An engaging talk with demonstrations, from a gardening expert. Who is the course for? Beginners with no experience, or gardeners with some gardening knowledge who’d like to know more.You should be able to spend a morning outside on your feet, though you are welcome to bring a folding chair with you to sit on if this is helpful. The Group Jenny teaches in small groups which ensures everyone gets the opportunity to practice, and time to ask questions.
