Join BAFTA-winning actor, comedian, director, and writer Richard Ayoade for an evening of reflections as he shares insights from his latest book, Afterthoughts, or Some Pistachios Won't Open: Wisdom for the Unreflective. Partially recognisable for being in The IT Crowd, his acclaimed films Submarine and The Double, he has also hosted TV landfill like Travel Man and The Crystal Maze, and lent his nasal voice to The Boxtrolls, Early Man, Soul and The Bad Guys. But you may well know him best for his role as ‘photographer’ in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers in which he delivered the iconic line: ‘Please, Mr Sellers, can I get a shot of you and your mum?’ Now, in the midst of some self-inflicted financial difficulty, he turns to the stage, inviting you to explore over 500 of his colossal notions. Thoughts like… Where’s the box to tick if you ARE a robot? If, when one door shuts, another door opens, there's something wrong with your doors. They shouldn't be doing that. TV detectives need a gimmick. Mine would be not caring who did it. Afterthoughts goes beyond rumination, past pondering, probing further than ever before. Drawing from a deeply private pool of questions—a reservoir so refreshing you may never need to think again. Age restriction: 16+ at the discretion of a parent or guardian (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+)

The Jazz Mix Presents Thunderthumbs

Join us for the evening to celebrate the great 70’s/80’s Soul and Funk songs from George Benson, Quincy Jones, George Duke, Michael Jackson, Jeffrey Osborne, The Brothers Johnson and more. “Thunderthumbs” the 10-piece band led by top UK Session bassist Phil Mulford plays the hits and more in an evening of the funky bass lines that the great US bassist Louis Johnson played on. Come on down for an evening of great songs and funky grooves. The set-list includes cuts from throughout Louis’ career from his time with Billy Preston in 1972 through to The Brothers Johnson and the Quincy Jones produced hits he played on, songs like George Benson’s Love X Love, Quincy Jones tracks ‘The Dude’, ‘Ai No Corrida’, Michael MacDonald’s ‘I Keep Forgettin’ and his own group The Brothers Johnson’s ‘Strawberry Letter 23’, ‘Stomp’ as well as a whole host of funky instrumentals. Lights, Camera, Animate! – SEESMA 2026

South East Essex Schools’ Music Association (SEESMA) returns in 2026 with Lights, Camera, Animate! —a spectacular celebration of the magic of animation. Step into the world of cartoons and cinema as we journey through the history of animation, bringing to life some of your all-time favourite animated characters and soundtracks. Join choirs and orchestras from over 60 schools across South East Essex as they sing and play their way through iconic themes and unforgettable moments from the animated world. Expect colour, creativity, and plenty of nostalgia—this is a show the whole family will love. SEESMA was formed in 1980, continuing a proud tradition of music festivals in Southend that spans almost ninety years across a variety of venues. Each year, SEESMA organises and hosts both the Junior Music Festival—held over five nights at the Cliffs Pavilion—and the Infant Music Festival at Kings Road Church. Each performance will support one of five chosen charities. Tickets are always in high demand and shows are likely to sell out—so be sure to book early and secure your seat for this unforgettable animated adventure.
