Children's Automaton Workshop

Discover the magic of movement in this fun and imaginative hands-on workshop! Young makers will become inventors, artists and engineers as they design and build their own moving automaton. Using a simple mechanical mechanism, each child will create a unique character or scene that springs to life with the turn of a handle. After exploring how movement works, children will let their imaginations run wild, crafting their own creations using a wonderful selection of materials including cardboard, air-drying clay, fabric and other decorative elements. Whether it's a flying dragon, dancing animal, colourful monster or something completely original, every automaton will be a one-of-a-kind work of art to take home. Along the way, participants will develop creative problem-solving skills while learning the fascinating principles behind cams, mechanisms and kinetic sculpture in a relaxed, supportive studio environment. No previous experience is needed, just imagination and a willingness to experiment! Suitable for: Children aged 8+ All materials are included, and each child will leave with their own working automaton to treasure. PLEASE NOTE: Lunch is not included. Please ensure your child has eaten lunch before attending. There will be breaks during the afternoon and children are welcome to bring a snack. Juice and water will be available throughout the afternoon.
