Carmen

Despite an initial failure at its 1875 premiere, the opera ‘Carmen’ by French composer Georges Bizet became one of the most popular and frequently performed operas globally due to its innovative portrayal of a free-spirited heroine and its iconic pieces like the “Habanera“, the “Toreador song”, and the “Flower song”. The opera tells us about a passionate and ultimately tragic love triangle between the fiery, free-spirited gypsy Carmen, the soldier Don José, and the celebrated bullfighter Escamillo. The story follows Don José as he abandons his military career and former sweetheart to be with Carmen, but his obsession leads to jealousy and violence when she loses interest and falls for the charismatic Escamillo. Being one of the most popular operas in the world, it is reinterpreted in different time periods and cultural contexts, from historically accurate recreations of the original 1875 Paris premiere to modern adaptations. Exeter Opera Group gives its own interpretation of the renowned opera. We try to remind that Carmen in some way portrays violence against women depicting a woman’s murder by a rejected lover, an act that has been re-evaluated in modern times as “femicide” and is often used to discuss domestic violence. We explore this difficult subject through the musical and directing approach seeing the tragic consequences of a woman’s refusal to conform to patriarchal norms and the male possessiveness that can lead to such extreme violence.
