Welcome to Hobson’s, Chapel Street, where the discerning folk of Victorian Salford go for the finest boots. They run a tight ship at Hobson’s, at least Maggie, the proprietor’s eldest daughter does. Hobson himself is more often to be found in the local pub spending the profits, and putting the world to rights. This does not suit Maggie, or her two sisters who crave excitement and dream of married lives, away from the tyranny of their father, and the drudgery of the shop. Changes are coming to Hobson’s boot shop, and they are changes that the curmudgeonly bootmaker is unlikely to find welcome. Harold Brighouse’s Lancashire comedy was first performed in 1916 and is still as well-made and comfortable as a stout pair of boots. An Amateur Production
