Mandy is best known for her textile collages which incorporate vintage and antique fabrics, repurposed needlework made by previous generations, lace and fragments of old quilt. The fabric book format allows her to work on an intimate scale with just small scraps of preciousness. Each page can have a different mood though sometimes there is a narrative be it stitch, a colour or a favourite fabric that runs through the whole book. In this workshop you will choose to construct either a side bound book or a concertina book . It will be very personal to you so spend some time collecting things together that you really want to use . Some special pieces of fabric, a piece of antique garment that you could deconstruct or a collection of lace might start your story off . Mandy will bring some examples of other book formats so that you go away fully inspired to make fabric books to use up all those special bits you have been wondering how to use. Essential materials that students must provide. One metre of heavy weight calico for the pages. If you prefer to use an antique linen bring this instead. Country Snowballs Quilt Workshop

The Country Snowballs workshop is based on the quilt pattern in Kaffe Fassett’s book, Quilts on an English Farm, but snowball patterns from some of Kaffe’s other book could also be used. This is a class suitable for beginners who already know how to sew a seam and how to use a rotary cutter. It is also for more advanced quilters who wish to concentrate on complex colour development. This workshop is a study in using variations on a single colour or colour group, or having a more varied palette, as in Kaffe’s original. Keep this in mind when choosing fabrics: find your colour and don’t stray too far from it, or choose from a wider palette. If you would like to explore RED, bring reds, oranges, reddish purples, magenta, warm brown, etc. Please note: No sewing takes place during the workshop. SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS • Copy of Kaffe Fassett book: Quilts on an English Farm • Rotary cutter • Cutting mat - at least 12” x 18” • Rotary ruler is recommended - 6” x 12” • Kaffe Fassett flannel design wall - at least 40” x 72” (if you need to order this from Cowslip, please let us know £34) • Fabric scissors • Pencil • Pins • Optional: reducing glass or peephole BEFORE THE CLASS MAIN FABRICS Bring at least 1/4yd – 1/2yd pieces of 20 different large-scale prints that are harmonious together, either florals as used in the original, or another theme if preferred. They might be all light and dark or mostly a colour you prefer such as blues, or reds.

Diamond Quilt Workshop

Diamond workshop is based on the Contrast Diamonds quilt pattern in Kaffe Fassett’s book, Quilts in London. This is a class suitable for beginners who already know how to sew a seam and how to use a rotary cutter. It is also for more advanced quilters who wish to concentrate on complex colour development. Please note: No sewing takes place during the workshop. SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS • Quilts in London • Rotary cutter • Cutting mat - at least 12” x 18” • Ruler - 6” x 24” with 60º angle marked line Optional: Clearview Triangle • Kaffe Fassett flannel design wall – 2 yards (if you need to order this from Cowslip, please let us know £34) • Fabric scissors • Pencil • Pins • Optional: reducing glass or peephole On the day of the workshop, you will be able to buy a range of fabrics through the host shop. Kaffe & Brandon will be able to assist you in selecting colours and patterns to use in your quilt. BEFORE THE CLASS MAIN FABRICS Bring at least ½ yard pieces of 20 different medium to large scale prints that are harmonious together. They might be all light and dark or mostly a color palette you prefer such as blues, or reds. The prints you choose should be similar in tone and pattern but most important should be large scale. If not sure, bring some extras and be prepared to shop during the workshop. Fabrics not suitable for this workshop include small textured prints and precut packs. For example: All reds from magenta to tomato.

Alfred

Textile Artist Mandy Pattullo has for a long time loved the Cornish painter Alfred Wallis’s naïve paintings of little ships, harbours and seascapes . These little scenes are familiar to anyone visiting St Ives but they can also provide inspiration for a seaside themed collage. For this course you will work with a muddy coloured palette of fabrics which fit in with Wallis's aesthetic and we will use these to build up a collage based on his paintings. Mandy will provide inspiration in terms of drawings and the idea is to capture the “spirit” of this fisherman painter. This is a textile collage course with purposefully naive outcomes. You will work on a small scale using rough edged applique and Mandy will suggest stitch details which will bring your picture alive. Students to provide: A sewing kit - scissors, lots of pins and needles Pictures.Please bring any visual material you have on the paintings of Alfred Wallis. You may have a book but otherwise print some image from the internet that appeal to you. Fabrics. You don’t need large pieces - A4 size plenty big enough. Please bring a muddy palette of cotton fabrics - dark and light greys, beiges, browns but also some small bits of black, white and sea and sky blues. Look at Mandy’s stitched samples for reference.

Rughooking

In this class you will learn the technique of Rughooking to create your own piece with a simple design, from just hessian and waste fabric, which could become a small mat, picture, seat pad, bag, etc. All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you would like to use them in your project. Making rag rugs is the ultimate sustainable textile craft, having originated centuries ago when worn out clothing and discarded textiles were used to create functional floor coverings for warmth and protection. It’s simple, needs minimal equipment and colourful fun results can be made quickly. . You probably won’t finish your project in a day, but full instructions will be given on how to complete your chosen outcome. Student needs to bring… Sharp scissors Rug hook. (nb NOT a latch hook) you will need a Primitive or American style Rug Hook. These can be bought in advance for £6.99 from www.craftsuppliesuk.co.uk or there will be some hooks available on the day to borrow and/or purchase. You may also like to work with a frame, for beginners an 12” or bigger round quilting hoop will work perfectly. Again I will bring some for you to borrow.
