Join us at Eccles Library to celebrate Salford 100 and take a look at some of the history that shaped Salford City. For our third talk, Library Development Officer Claire Gorton will be discussing the life of Charis Frankenburg, campaigner for maternity and infant welfare and the founder of one of the first birth control clinics in the country in Salford. Free refreshments will be available after the talk. FREE, booking required.

Festival of Libraries: Comics Creativity Galore

Join cartoonist Marc Jackson (BEANO, THE PHOENIX, and GOOF COMIC) for a crazy-fun, comics and cartoon art workshop!! You’ll learn how to create characters for comics, all the basics to how they can be made, whilst breaking the rules and having fun all at the same time. Let’s celebrate drawing and having fun, taking away the concerns about getting things ‘right’ or having it ‘perfect’ Marc brings his own brand of lively comics making to Walkden Library. Marc Jackson is a cartoonist from the UK who has created characters and comics for BEANO, THE PHOENIX, Hey Kids Comics, and is the founder of GOOF, a comics anthology for kids of all ages! Marc also runs ROOM FOR COMICS (a comic art studio in Macclesfield, Cheshire) with his wife Jane that is dedicated to the teaching of comics and cartoon art .They also organise MACC-POW! Macclesfield’s annual comic art festival, celebrating its 11th year this year! FREE, booking required.

Festival of Libraries: Haunted Homes – A Horror Writing Workshop

Where do you feel a sense of belonging? For many, spaces of belonging centre on the home: a physical location which – through its sturdy walls and locked doors – protects us from the dangers of the outside world. However, in the modern world, technology and devices can open new doors into our homes. The spectres of history and society can enter whether they are invited or not. As part of the Festival of Libraries, this chilling workshop will look at horror fiction of the page and screen, questioning who and what belongs in the home. We will then put pen to paper and reclaim what belonging means to us, as we explore how horror can help us to confront and understand our anxieties in a creative way. The workshop will include discussions and guided writing activities. No previous writing experience is necessary, and there’s no pressure to share anything during the workshop. Bring something to write with / on if you like, but we will also have pens and paper. Suitable for ages 16 years and over. Workshop facilitators: Dr Mark Yates (Lecturer in English Literature, University of Salford) and Alex Herod (PhD Candidate, University of Salford). FREE, booking required.

Salford Creative Health Network Meeting

Shaping how culture and creativity can improve wellbeing in Salford. The next Salford Creative Health Network meeting is on Thursday 18 June 2026, from 11am to 1pm at Salford University’s Student Union. This meeting is for any health and social care services in the city – along with community groups and arts organisations. If you’ve had personal experience of creativity improving your wellbeing – then we’d love you to join the Network. Members of lived-experience forums are especially welcome, as are artists and creative practitioners. The focus of this meeting is to workshop the Salford Creative Health Action Plan as a zine. Zines are self-published, mini magazines that explore a subject someone feels passionately about. The word comes from fanzine. Salford has 2 zine libraries – so it seems like this publication has a special connection to the city. Staff from Salford University Library are going to bring some good examples of zines to the meeting as inspiration. Find out more about Salford Zine Library → Over the last few months, 7 community groups in Salford have been exploring what creativity means to them and how it improves their health. They’ve told us what they think the key barriers and opportunities are in the city. Before the meeting, we’ll send attendees a short synopsis of the community feedback and our current draft Action Plan.
