Wednesday 8 July 6 - 9 pm Fiona Oliver Larkin & Jill Martin Boualaxai Drawing habits form quickly. Most of the time the pencil sits close to the page, the wrist anchored, the marks controlled and efficient. This workshop interrupts that. Using extended tools, weighted handles and unusual grips, we’ll experiment with drawing tools that don’t simply obey the hand. A long stick changes your reach. Added weight slows the movement. Familiar gestures stop working in the same way. As the conditions shift, the marks begin to change. Lines wobble, drag or hesitate. Movement comes from the arm and shoulder rather than the fingers. Through a series of simple exercises, we’ll explore how altering the relationship between body, tool and surface changes the mark that appears. The drawing becomes less about control and more about gesture and response to what happens on the page. The session connects to practices where tools sit between the body and mark-making, including the work of Rebecca Horn. Expect large paper, improvised tools and plenty of experimentation. Suitable for all levels. Materials provided.
