Wednesday 17 June 6 – 9 pm Tutor: Ginny Elston This workshop will work with the body as a primary means of mark making and drawing. We will explore how drawing can be an inquiry into the internal, felt sense of the body, as opposed to an external form to be described. Responding with a sense of creativity and imagination to a series of props and everyday materials, we will explore how our drawings can speak of more abstract and also more felt phenomena, such as time, movement, internal spaces and states. Students will work individually for this workshop, using simple, lo-fi materials to explore a range of approaches to mark-making. Through a series of guided prompts, you’ll experiment with gesture, repetition and scale, allowing drawings to develop through movement and process rather than aiming for a fixed outcome. As the session develops, you’ll work at a larger scale across wall and floor surfaces, using the body as both a tool and a point of reference. Marks are built up through layering and accumulation, creating drawings that sit between the abstract and the experiential. The workshop is process-led and exploratory, with space to follow your own responses as they emerge. Artists such as Rebecca Horn, Bruce Nauman, Tony Orrico and Karina Smigla-Bobinski offer useful reference points for this way of working.
