Nata a New York, Dorothy Burlingham scelse un percorso diverso, allontanandosi dalla sua vita precedente per dedicarsi alla psicoanalisi. Nel 1925 si trasferì a Vienna, dove lavorò a stretto contatto con Anna Freud, e nel 1938 si stabilì a Londra. Qui collaborò con Anna Freud allo sviluppo della psicoanalisi infantile, dedicando la propria vita alla comprensione e al sostegno dei bambini.
