About this event
7pm - 8.30pm, £20, in building // While widely known in Germany, the Royal Academy’s ‘Making Modernism’ exhibition in 2022 presented a rare opportunity to see a brilliant but small display of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s work. This talk will put into context how in the early 1900’s Modersohn-Becker created an approach to painting in less than a decade that was original to her time that defies category. With themes focusing the landscape, portraiture, adolescence, self portraits, and motherhood. The vibrant work predates ‘German Expressionism,’ leaving contemporary trends of her time in the dust like the Worpswede Artist Colony. Her work still resonates with a visceral energy to viewers today.
