This month we’re hugely excited to welcome back The Howl & The Hum’s Sam Griffiths in a solo outing. This promises be an incredibly special evening. Sam Griffiths Sam Griffiths is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in London. From their roots in the Leeds and York music scenes his band The Howl & The Hum have released a top 20 charting debut album and toured across the UK, Europe and beyond. They have played in session on BBC Radio 6 Music, featured on BBC Radio One and Radio X. The band released their second album, “Same Mistake Twice” in 2024 to widespread acclaim. Alice Leggett: Reunion Band Part 2

Doors 7:30 PM, Music 8:00 PM - 2 sets of music Line-up: Alice Leggett - Alto saxophone Alex Hitchcock - Tenor saxophone Miles Mindlin - guitar Freddie Jensen - Double bass James Maddren - Drum kit About: Alice returns to the Vortex two years after performing with the original 'Reunion Band' in summer 2024 for another one-time special evening involving some of her favourite London-affiliated musicians. The majority of the musicians in the first and second lineups are or have been based in New York and Europe, providing additional excitement and energy from their diverse life experiences. The initial reunion band ignited Alice's compositional journey, influencing and inspiring her subsequent collaborations. Alice's debut album, 'Birdsong,' features songs first debuted at the Vortex, and she has subsequently embarked on two tours in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Collaboration and community are key aspects in Alice's lineups, and all of the musicians featured have embraced these characteristics with her throughout the years, resulting in deep creative connections. Another half century has since passed, where new compositions have not been added to this shared language. A Celebration of The Life and Music of Richard Turner

Doors 7:45 PM, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music Line-up: Mike Chillingworth - Alto Saxophone Tom Farmer - Double bass Josh Morrison - Drums About Tonight, we will honour Richard Turner, the brilliant trumpeter, composer, pillar of the London Jazz community. Though Richard tragically passed away in August 2011 at just 27 years old, his legacy endures. As we approach the 15th anniversary of his passing, the remaining members of his quartet, Round Trip, return to the stage. Alongside special guest artists, they will perform the entirety of the band's self-titled debut album - Richard’s sole recorded work as a bandleader. This tribute concert also celebrates the album’s long-awaited debut on digital streaming platforms. For the concert, all tickets will be donated to Mind (registered charity number 219830).

Drawing on the rich traditions of jazz history and global musical influences, he has developed a voice that is both original and compelling. Today, he joins forces with the brilliant rising star of the UK jazz scene, vocalist Annie Majin, for a performance that promises innovation, energy, and musical chemistry. Since graduating from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music - where he was invited on a full scholarship- Zhenya has carved a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. He has worked with some of today’s most forward-thinking musicians, including Eric Harland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Lefebvre, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Alex Sipiagin, William Parker, Aaron Parks, Joseph "Foley" McCreary (of Miles Davis fame), and Larry Grenadier. Zhenya has performed at many prestigious jazz festivals and concert venues around the world, building an international reputation through extensive touring across both Europe and South America. He has recorded more than six albums with his groups Smiling Organizm, Never Group, and JZ Replacement. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio as well as on national radio stations across Europe.

His music is a blend of his Caribbean roots with the harmonic and improvisational complexities of jazz, creating a lively and eclectic meld all his own. Born in Trinidad, Leon Foster Thomas has proven through his albums and performances that the steel pan has the musical sophistication to be taken as seriously in the jazz universe as the more well-known vibraphone. Winner of the World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet competition of 2002 and 2004, critics laud him as “…masterful with impeccable musicianship” (When Steel Talks); “a benevolent wizard” (Venice Magazine). Leon has collaborated with legendary artists in the jazz scene and beyond including Hugh Masekela, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Vince Mendoza, Dolly Parton, John Beasley, Mino Cinelu, Orphy Robinson, Cyril Neville, Ky-Mani Marley and many more. He has performed at internationally renowned venues such as New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts in Miami, and Moscow’s International House of Music. He also played a significant part in Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
