40th Anniversary Concert - Season 1

The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge, conducted by Darrell Davison, performs a exciting programme of early 20th-century English works. Edward Elgar's Cockaigne Overture (1901) is followed by John Ireland's Piano Concerto (1930), featuring star soloist Christos Fountos. The second half of the concert comprises William Walton's monumental Symphony No. 1 (1935). The local charity which will benefit from this concert is Petals: The Baby Loss Counselling Charity. more about The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge The Cambridge Orchestra was founded in 1987 by the late Charles Sampson in response to requests for a new symphony orchestra which could harness the very talented players and music teachers within the Eastern Counties to perform large-scale classical repertoire to the highest standards. Many internationally acclaimed soloists have performed with the Cambridge Orchestra: these have included Tasmin Little, Piers Lane, Timothy Hugh, and David Campbell. The Orchestra has also presented Gala Ballet with Wayne Sleep and members of National Youth Ballet of Great Britain, and has participated regularly in the Cambridge Music Festival. In 2010 the governing organisation was changed into a charitable trust, registered with the Charity Commission, and the opportunity was taken to adopt a new name for the orchestra to commemorate its founder - The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge.

The Wave Machine

The Wave Machine Surfed Out Sounds Cornwall-based multi-instrumentalist The Wave Machine brings his ocean-inspired live looping show to Cambridge as a part of his Land Begins. Land Ends. UK tour. Blending guitar, bass, trumpet, percussion and vocals into laid-back “beach-rock” grooves, The Wave Machine creates a full band sound live on stage using loops and layered instrumentation. This show marks the start of a unique 10-day journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End, with Angus travelling the length of the UK on a Royal Enfield motorbike carrying his full live looping setup. Recognised within surf communities worldwide and featured on popular surf playlists and radio shows, The Wave Machine has toured internationally, including a debut tour along Australia’s east coast. His energetic performances have taken him to festivals and venues across the UK, building a growing following within the surf-music scene. Guitar at the Opera

…."A refined moment of classical guitar in which the strings of the instrument, played by the very sensitive hands of maestro Federico Quercia, have replaced the entire complexity of an orchestra designed for Italian opera"… Rete Abruzzo.com news The concert is introduced by the beautifully romantic Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, in the mandolin – style tremolo. The Sicilian Vespers is the name given to a rebellion in Sicily in 1282 against the rule of the Angevin king Charles I of Naples, who had taken control of the island with Papal support in 1266. It was the beginning of the eponymous War of the Sicilian Vespers. The Sevilla Barber was one of the earliest Italian operas to be performed in America and premiered at the Park Theatre in New York City on 29 November 1825. Rossini's Barber has proven to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all opere buffe; even after two hundred years, its popularity on the modern opera stage attests to that greatness. La Traviata is an Italian opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, after Alexandre Dumas, fils's novel La dame aux camélias, published in 1848.. The title "La traviata" means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or perhaps more figuratively, The Fallen One. Although a failure at its premiere, the opera soon established itself and became one of the best-loved and most frequently performed, recorded and filmed of all operas.

Now I'm back in the UK and I'm absolutely thrilled to invite you to our upcoming concert, "A Night at the Opera" , taking place on Saturday 29th November at 7:30 PM in the beautiful Bateman Auditorium at Gonville and Caius College , Cambridge. This special evening will feature a carefully curated selection of arias and duets from some of the most beloved operas in the repertoire.
