Dorset Mind Big Walk

Join us for The Dorset Mind BIG Walk 2026, our flagship annual community fundraising event bringing people together for a day of coastal walking, connection and supporting mental health across Dorset. Taking place on Sunday 27 September 2026, The BIG Walk is a Dorset charity walking event that welcomes individuals, families, friends, workplaces and community groups to take on a challenge while raising vital funds for Dorset Mind. Set against the backdrop of Dorset’s stunning coastline, participants can choose between two walking challenges designed to suit different abilities and goals. Our 30K Coastal Challenge is the ultimate challenge, taking walkers from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head and back along one of Dorset’s most beautiful coastal routes. This full-day fundraising walk is ideal for those looking to push themselves, take on a personal challenge or complete a memorable walking event. For those looking for a shorter and more accessible option, our 5K Wellbeing Walk starts at Sandbanks and heads towards Branksome Chine Beach. This route is suitable for all ages and abilities, including families, first-time charity walkers and anyone wanting to take part at their own pace. As Dorset Mind’s flagship annual walking event, The BIG Walk is about more than distance. It is about bringing people together, enjoying the outdoors, connecting with others and raising awareness and funds for mental health support across the county.

Youthful Rachmaninov

Have you got your tickets for Youthful Rachmaninov, performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra? On Wednesday 7 October, at The Lighthouse, Poole, the orchestra will perform the works of Rimsky-Korsakov, Saint-Saëns and Rachmaninov under the baton of BSO Principal Guest Conductor Chloé Van Soeterstède, alongside soloist Javier Perianes. A taut, realistic, and brutally human melodrama, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride was a shocking and brilliant departure from the composer best known for his magical, folkloric pageantry. A story of obsessive love, dark jealousy, and fatal revenge, the master orchestrator paints a dark, oppressive, and paranoia-filled world. Saint-Saëns composed his ‘Egyptian’ concerto in the temple town of Luxor. As well as the use of Middle Eastern traits, the music also displays influences from Javanese and Spanish styles. He said that the piece represented a sea voyage – the piano and orchestra produce impressionistic sounds emulating frogs and the chirping of Nile crickets. After a promising beginning as a talented composer and performer, Rachmaninov’s confidence and momentum, if not his entire career, suddenly seemed to fizzle after premiere of his First Symphony. The performance must have been appalling. For the next three years he wrote nothing and the symphony itself was never performed again in his lifetime.
