Explore the push-chair friendly paths around the Gardens on our family trail this Summer. Follow Pipkin, a young dragon who feels lost and different because of their brilliant blue colour. Help Pipkin on a journey through landscapes, play spaces, and creative challenges to discover what blue really means. Along the way, build, draw, play, imagine, and explore—bringing blue back to life in surprising ways. From building towers to creating rivers without water, every stop reveals a new side of blue: calm, powerful, playful, and full of joy. Expressions in Blue: Monumental Porcelain by Felicity Aylieff

Expressions in Blue continues Petworth’s rich history of collaboration with contemporary artists. Renowned ceramicist Felicity Aylieff has created several new pieces, revealed for the first time. Highly decorative floral fencai‑enamelled vessels take their inspiration from intricate wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons, while other sculptures draw on Petworth’s magnificent collection of 17th‑century Chinese porcelain. Occupying several rooms throughout the mansion, highlights include the Marble Hall, where visitors are able to walk around and through a ‘forest’ of huge blue and white pots, painted in cobalt blue glazes with brushstrokes full of movement. Climbing Petworth’s Grand Staircase, they can look down on another monolithic work, whilst outside two soaring obelisks stand between the house and the Upper Pond. In the exhibition gallery, film and photographs reveal the remarkable ‘making’ process and its sheer physicality. A selection of Aylieff’s fascinating mark-making tools are displayed, including giant horsehair brushes used to whip around the vessels to create energetic flicks and splashes.

Join us on Fridays throughout the summer holidays for drop-in art activities inspired by our current exhibition, 'Expressions in Blue'. Fun Art Fridays will take place in our Battery House Studio, ideal for a rainy day or seeking some shade. Fun Art Fridays will run from 11am-3.30pm on the following dates: Friday 24th July Friday 31st July Friday 7th August Friday 14th August Friday 21st August Friday 28th August The drop-in art activities are free with normal admission.

Atmospheric landscape painting in oils – inspired by Turner at Petworth House

This course is run across two spectacular sites: West Dean College and Petworth House. The course will focus on drawing and oil painting techniques. On the first full day you’ll be able to take inspiration from the permanent collection at Petworth. You’ll then explore the grounds where your tutor will guide you through creating sketches in preparation for painting, the fundamentals of composition, how to balance light and dark in a landscape and build perspective and proportion to make strong foundations for oil paintings. On the second day, you’ll return to Petworth to develop your ideas. Your tutor will introduce the day with a lesson of oil painting techniques and ideas to help translate your sketches into paintings. You’ll be guided through painting application, colour mixing and how to use mediums to create atmosphere in your landscapes. You can elect to work outside, painting ‘en plein air’ or in the studio at Petworth, working at your own pace with your tutor on hand to give you helpful tips and pointers along the way. On the final day, you’ll work at West Dean to build your oil painting into final works. You’ll be guided through second pass techniques layering your works into strong pieces of art. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss any issues you may face and tips on how to correct problem areas. The day will conclude with a quick plenary and Q&A session to summarise everything you have learnt.
