Summer of Play at Seaton Delaval Hall

Join playful, drop-in circus activities or sit back and watch the experts with mini circus performances and demonstrations. Get musical with the recycled junk Orchestra. Rummage for the perfect props and perform on the Baroque-inspired stage in the West Wing, to the backdrop of your favourite hits with a regency flavour. Let imaginations free in the Delaval Playdium play area with its multi-level stages, pulleys and leavers bringing productions to life and bring your chalks to create your very own theatrical scenery on the chalk board ‘flats’. See who's competitive in hobby horse races, or delve into a chest full of sports kit and ball games, plus table tennis and badminton and traditional games like tower block building or four-in-a-row. Every Friday in the Community Kitchen Garden, there's the chance to harvest and get crafty with nature or curl up in the sheltered story corner with Young Gardeners. And when you're tired out, head to the Tent of Wonder and chill out on the giant beanbags. Enjoy an ice cream from the van near the Delaval Playdium, relax at a shady picnic spot in the Arboretum or grab some lunch from the Brewhouse. Put your sun hat on – or, possibly, your wellies - and come and make the most of being outdoors this summer!

Vanbrugh 300: Sandy Nairne, Sir Charles Saumarez Smith and Mark Newman

Introduced by historian, curator and Deputy Chair of the National Trust, Sandy Nairne, former Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts, Director of the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, Sir Charles Saumarez Smith discusses Vanbrugh’s later career and his links to Seaton Delaval Hall, following the publication of his recent book, John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture. National Trust Consultant Archaeologist Mark Newman shares how archaeological and historical research at Seaton Delaval Hall since the National Trust acquired it in 2009 has added to our understanding of the hall, the estate and Vanbrugh’s involvement in it. This year‑long festival honours Vanbrugh’s life, legacy, and theatrical architectural vision. Vanbrugh 300 is presented by The Georgian Group, with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Vanbrugh 300: John Vanbrugh and the Queen’s Theatre in the Haymarket

When, in the early 1700s, Vanbrugh began making plans for a new London playhouse, he was typically ambitious in his approach. ‘I have drawn a design for the whole disposition of the inside, very different from any other House in being,’ he told his friend Jacob Tonson. The resulting theatre (unveiled in 1705) sought to combine both dramatic and operatic productions in a visually dynamic setting. However, his project was in many respects a failure, and it was not until the 1720s, after numerous alterations and various attempts at management, did it begin to function effectively. This event tackles the Queen’s Theatre in the Haymarket from two related perspectives. Dr Nicholas Helm explores the question of ‘architectural essence’ in theatre design, and how Vanbrugh engaged with this in a very particular – and pioneering – way, using the Haymarket project to look for his own, Italianate formula. Dr Helm will explore Vanbrugh’s drive and natural exuberance, and assess how this led him to try to challenge architecture to celebrate a union between architecture and performance. Theatre historian Dr Annette Rubery will then take up the story from a cultural perspective, introducing some of the figures associated with the theatre. She will attempt to reconstruct the life of the building with reference to its scenery, repertoire and acoustics, and will argue that – far from being a disaster – Vanbrugh’s bold experiment was a vital political tool at a time of national turmoil.
