Guided Tour of Selby Abbey

No booking required – just turn up! (Tours, which last about 75 minutes, are free but donations are invited) Meet your guide at 10.30am inside the West Door of Selby Abbey to explore the history of the first monastery to be established in the North of England after the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066. Wonder at the amazing Romanesque and Gothic architecture and hear how, despite two great fires, the collapse of the central tower and the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century, Selby Abbey has survived as a vibrant place of pilgrimage, events, prayer and worship. Tour dates for 2026: 5th January 17th January 2nd February 14th February 2nd March 21st March 13th April 18th April 11th May 23rd May 8th June 20th June 13th July 25th July 3rd August 15th August 7th September 19th September 5th October 17th October 2nd November 21st November 7th December 19th December Tours are available at other times for groups or individuals by prior arrangement. Authors in the Abbey 2026

Authors in the Abbey is returning for its second year. This year we have over thirty Authors and bookish vendors attending the Abbey. Authors from Selby, North Yorkshire and the Surrounding areas are bringing their books, which have diverse topics and genres including poetry, romance, science fiction and crime to name a few. This year we also have panels and talks from the authors taking place on subjects that include how they became a writer, what happens when your favourite book is turned into a TV series and many more including a question and answer session. There will also be a lucky dip for those who have bought books from the authors and a tombola. The Abbey coffee and gift shop will be open from 10:00 until 3:30pm for refreshments.
