NadiaReid – live with strings To celebrate the digital release of her Record Store Day album ‘Live at St Paul’s With NZ Trio’ (coming 25th September on Chrysalis) New Zealand–raised, Manchester-based songwriter Nadia Reid presents a run of intimate shows featuring old and new songs, re-imagined with a two-piece string ensemble. Reid reflects: “In 2021 some of my songs were arranged by Alex Taylor for violin, piano and cello. It feels special to be digging out those scores and performing with Todmorden-based multi-instrumentalist DBH, and newcomer Josh Horsley from Liverpool on cello.” These intimate shows are not to be missed. Nadia is currently working on new material for her fifth studio album. “It’s a highway, filled with deep, exotic colors and beautiful delicate things as well as the perils that come from moving so fast,” says Dar Williams, describing modern life. On her 13th album, Hummingbird Highway, out September 12 on Righteous Babe Records, Williams celebrates the colors she glimpses from her vantage as a touring musician. “I was a kid from the suburbs who listened when her hippie teachers said to get out in the world,” Williams muses. Hummingbird Highway is the latest chapter in a richly unfolding story. Drawing on her experience as a playwright, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes. On the title track, Williams sings from the perspective of a child speaking to her peripatetic and sometimes struggling parent. Blooming columbines, china blue teapots, and cinnamon bark number among the “treasures” in her life, despite the “pirates” that she imagines populating her worldly parent’s life. “The pirates can be all sorts of things living inside and outside your head. The child, for better or worse, knows that there is joy, unpredictability, and instability on the home front. She’s rooting for the joy.”

The Blow Monkeys with special guest Pete Williams

The Blow Monkeys are unique with a career spanning over 40 years. Always making new music, always stretching their own musical boundaries. With worldwide hits such as the classics ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, they became household names but there was always so much more going on with these soulful troubadours. Their relentless desire to move forward, to collaborate, to be socially engaged and to have something tocontribute. Back in the 80’s they worked with people as varied as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and even Jamaican Toaster EEK-a-Mouse! “No band since The Clash in their early 80’s heyday had attempted to act as a sounding board for such politically engaged, eclectic music” Dr Robert even took time out to release one of the UK’s first homegrown “house’” records ‘Wait”’ his top 5 duet with Chicago soul diva Kym Maselle. And so the journey continues. Reformed in 2008 The Blow Monkeys have been incredibly productive releasing nine new albums and playing hundreds of concerts. And now in the Summer of 2024 comes a sparkling new album ‘Birdsong’ on Alan McGee’s ‘Creation Youth’ label. “I had a chance meeting with Alan at Youth‘s studio up here in the mountains near Granada and he asked me to write and record a “brilliant Blow Monkey record“. I knew what he meant. The songs just poured out almost without effort which is always a good sign.. Its a very ‘up’ record … deliberately so.” Says Robert.
