Heritage Open Days Guided Tour

For this year’s Heritage Open Days, why not enjoy a free guided tour of the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum? Led by our knowledgeable guides, find out about the life and work of Dr Samuel Johnson and explore the family home where he grew up. Tickets will be available to book from June. Please be aware that the Museum is a Grade I listed building with many steps, and regrettably wheelchair access is not available.

Samuel Johnson's 317th Birthday Celebrations

Join us in celebrating Samuel Johnson’s 317th birthday and the 125th anniversary of the Birthplace Museum. Mark the occasion with a slice of cake and enjoy a day filled with free activities for all ages. Step back in time with engaging living-history demonstrations, where you can meet costumed characters from the past, including a Georgian cook showcasing what people ate in the 1700s. Watch a skilled calligrapher at work, then try your own hand with quill and ink in our Workroom, or explore the museum with our fun family trail.

Spooky Family Craft Activity

Join us between 11am and 1pm for a hands-on family craft activity. £2 per child for the craft activity, accompanying adults free. Booking is not essential, drop-ins welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Entrance to the Museum is free and we have lots of fun free activities including quill pen writing, colouring-in, and costume to try on.

Meet the Barber Surgeon

Come and meet the 18th – century Barber Surgeon! Find out about his medicine and cures from the past. Hear how herbs, leeches, and frogs were used to treat the sick. See his gruesome tools of the trade and hear about bloodletting and amputation! This is a fun free event, suitable for families, booking not essential. Entrance to the Museum is free, donations are most welcome. Meet the Barber Surgeon 10.30am-4.00pm. Museum and Bookshop open 10.30am-4.30pm.

Christmases Past: Discover the Surprising History of Christmas in Britain

Join us for a festive evening with popular guest speaker Sheelagh James, as she delves into the fascinating ways the British have celebrated, and sometimes skipped, Christmas over the centuries. From kissing boughs and Christmas crackers to mistletoe, yule logs, mince pies, and the arrival of the Christmas tree, explore how traditions evolved, disappeared, and re-emerged to shape the season we know today. It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit! Tickets include a glass of wine or soft drink, plus a delicious mince pie. Tickets cost £14 per person. Pre-booking is essential, spaces are limited. Tickets can be booked in person in our Bookshop, or by calling us on . Tickets will be available to purchase online from July. Doors open from 6:30pm-7:00pm, a complimentary drink is served on arrival. Doors close at 7:00pm. As we’re a small team, latecomers may not be admitted. Tickets are non-refundable. Please note – this event is not suitable for children under the age of 14. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The event will be held on the first floor of the museum, accessible only by stairs. Due to the building’s Grade I listed status, we are unable to install a lift or ramp, widen doorways, or modify the handrails. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
