Expressions in Blue: Monumental Porcelain by Felicity Aylieff

Expressions in Blue continues Petworth’s rich history of collaboration with contemporary artists. Renowned ceramicist Felicity Aylieff has created several new pieces, revealed for the first time. Highly decorative floral fencai‑enamelled vessels take their inspiration from intricate wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons, while other sculptures draw on Petworth’s magnificent collection of 17th‑century Chinese porcelain. Occupying several rooms throughout the mansion, highlights include the Marble Hall, where visitors are able to walk around and through a ‘forest’ of huge blue and white pots, painted in cobalt blue glazes with brushstrokes full of movement. Climbing Petworth’s Grand Staircase, they can look down on another monolithic work, whilst outside two soaring obelisks stand between the house and the Upper Pond. In the exhibition gallery, film and photographs reveal the remarkable ‘making’ process and its sheer physicality. A selection of Aylieff’s fascinating mark-making tools are displayed, including giant horsehair brushes used to whip around the vessels to create energetic flicks and splashes.

Fun Art Fridays will take place in our Battery House Studio, ideal for a rainy day or seeking some shade. Deep Relaxation Sound Journey Session

DEEP RELAXATION SOUND JOURNEY SESSION Friday 24th July | 7pm-8pm Rebalance yourself with sound Listen to the calming sounds of a variety of gongs, singing bowls and gentle percussion in a therapeutic sonic experience for relaxation and well-being. Sound and well-being Its important to make time for ourselves, and to look after our wellbeing. These sessions use a range of large gongs, played in a gentle and sensitive manner to help achieve a deep sense of relaxation and meditation which can help to restore the mind and body back to equilibrium. It is a great pleasure to have provided regular monthly sound sessions at Cowdray for over 5 years in this stunning and tranquil location. I bring a wealth of experience with sound and also having been a musician for over 40 years, this combined with my personal approach to playing the gongs which has been an integral part of my own life path. Using a unique multi-sensory approach to make every session a powerful and varied sonic journey through sound which reaches far beyond the normal soundbath experience. The oven is lit and wood-fired pizzas are back at Cowdray Farm Shop & Café. Served on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4pm. Delicious sourdough bases, made in-house by our team of chefs, are topped with homemade passata and the highest quality mozzarella. All cooked in a matter of minutes in our wood-fired oven based in the Farm Shop courtyard.
