In the aftermath of the American Revolution, female education was a critical space for civic development, and needlework was one educational medium in which girls processed their own identities within the new nation. This lecture will connect needlework within the exhibition with pieces from other public collections, and broadly trace the rich lives of early American girls engaged in crafting a nation. Workshop Beginners’ Outdoor Cooking Saturday 12th September, 10:00 - 14:00 This workshop is designed for beginners, rather than bushcraft experts. It is suitable for adults and secondary school aged children (who must be accompanied by a paying adult). No dogs please. If you are interested in what you can cook on the garden fire pit or how to make tasty treats on a spirit camping stove, this workshop could be for you. The workshop will be led by members of our Learning and Skills Team. For much of the time we will be in the beautiful Gorcott Hill Wood- a site not normally accessible to the public. During the workshop we will look at lighting and building fire for cooking, equipment tips, fire and stove safety, cooking with a spirit stove, making flat breads or pancakes which can be cooked quickly over coals, making vegetable and fruit kebabs and baking in coals. £50 plus fees More information and booking

Presented in partnership with Jay Heritage Center (NY), Friends of John Jay Homestead, and Menokin and Stratford Hall (VA), this series destabilizes the one-dimensional portraits we’ve inherited and invites audiences to sit with the full complexity of these lives: the ambition and the insecurity, the idealism and the grudges, the smear campaigns and the shared cause. Francine Brown We are delighted to welcome Francine as a guest exhibitor to the gallery. Francine works primarily with watercolours against a clay and mineral background. The soft veils of colour against a naturally illuminating ground provided an ethereal calmness to her work, inviting contemplation and a moment of respite from the noise of everyday life.She utilises a warm, muted palette to gain greater control over the visual effect and employs negative space to create a sense of calm and breathing room with the composition.
